Geared to the needs Tables have been added to such articles as Bridge and Tunnels. The largest new table in the 1973 edition eight pages in length accompan ies "the article Nobel Prizes. This table lists all winners of the Nobel prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology or med icine, literature, peace, and economic sciences; the years in which they received the of a wide range of learners from grade four to adulthood, with many new and revised major articles contributed by specialists in the subjects dis cussed, this sturdy reference set with the bright, durable binding will be popular with users of all ages in classrooms, libraries, and homes. i Truly a revision, the 1973 edi tion of Compton's includes 30 new articles; 16 rewritten ar ticles; 228 extensively revised articles; and 778 articles that required minor revisions. Work was done on more than one-fifth of the text pages and on 1.394 of the pages of the Fact-Index. A total of 553 illus trations, about a t h i r d of which are in full color, were added to the text, and 110 pages of text were added to the set. Among the major articles added are: Astronomy, Bio chemistry, Brain, Climate, Dog, Evolution, Hormones, Horse, Information Theory, Language, Literature, Litera ture for Children, Nerves, Painting, Solar System, Trans portation, Univese, and Weather A number of shorter articles added or rewritten for the 1873 edition contribute to its readability The new full-page biography of Eleanor Roose velt like the 1072 edition's biographies of Sirimavo Ban aranaike, Indira Gandhi, and Golda Meir is an example of the increased attention Compton's is giving to women who have played leading roles in politics There are three new country articles Bang ladesh (until recently known as East Pakistani; Monaco; and Yemen, People's Demo cratic Republic of. An interesting and attractive bibliographic innovation in the Horse article has a full-page annotated and illustrated bib liography that is divided into listings of both factual and fictional books. The illustra tions for the bibliography were drawn from several of the fictional works it listed. The new full-page bibliogra phy for Dog has been handled in the same way. About 2,000 pages of text were put into work for the 1973 edition in order to make essential improvements re quired to keep Compton's ac curate and up-to-date. The in corporation of new view points; updates in the names of institutions and organiza tions; data on new technical and scientific developments; current population figures and other current statistical data; the addition of revision of cross-references in text; the addition of cross-references to new Fact Entries in the Fact Index; and current events in formation help make this set relevant to today's world.
