Traffic safety experts re gard stopping on a high-speed road so dangerous that they urge motorists to go to ex treme lengths to avoid it. If a tire should blow out, it is still nec essary to get completely off the driv ing lanes. It may take a driver a thousand feet to work his way ' through two or three lanes of traf fic and get on the shoulder, but it must be done. The motorist who stops on a freeway endangers himself, his passengers, the occupants of following cars-and risks a lawsuit if his action forces other drivers into accidents. There have been far too many cases in which a stopped car has been struck violently from the rear by a following car whose driver was unable to stop in time or to steer in to another lane in congested traffic. The first collision has often caused several other fol lowing cars to collide with disastrous results. The rule applies to urban and intercity freeways. Keep moving, but if you must stop, get off on the shoulder. NASTURTIUMS -GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT Every portion of a Nastur tium is good to eat the flow ers, the stems and the leaves are great In salads, while the seeds are deuctoos pickled. For a really delicious taste thi ill, snap oil the spur of ,a nasturtium flower and eat it. The combination of sweet nec tar and mildly pungent flavor of the plant mingle to produce a delicious taste. Actually, the entire nastur tium plant, including stems, leaves, flowers and seeds are great to eat. The spicy leaves are good in sandwiches and salads, imparting a flavor sim ilar to garden cress. The seeds make a good winter snack. They grow large as peas and are easy to handle. Just clean and bottle them with freshly boiled vin egar. Then seal and store for winter. Of course, nasturtiums are beautiful in the flower garden. Choose dwarf varieties for low beds and borders, and tall types to climb up trellis and netting. Flowers are mostly yellow, orange and red on long stems excellent for dainty flower ar rangements. Cultivate soil well before planting seed in spring after danger of frost. When planted in shade or a soil that's too rich and moist, they have a ten dency to produce more leaves than flowers. Children love to plant nas turtium seeds because the seeds are very easy to handle, and the resulting plants have other at tractions. For instance, hum mingbirds love nasturtium nec tar, and if you have never seen a hummingbird in your garden a bed of nasturtiums might well attract them. Two popular va rieties of nasturtium are the Gleam and Jewel series. Flow ers of Gleam are extra-large and sweet-scented, growing 3 ft. tall with stems long enough to make beautiful flower arrange ments. The Jewel series are low-growing just 1 ft. high, each plant creating -a neat dome of flowers and foliage. Green Thumb Tips Moonflower is a quick-growing climber, producing massive 6 inch flowers which open at night with such speed that you can actually observe the petals move. In mild areas it can be grown as a perennial, but is best treated as an annual grown' fresh from seed each year. If you want to grow those gigantic sunflowers the kind people win contests with, the variety to look for in the seed displays and catalogs is Sun flower Mammoth. The black-and-white striped seeds should be planted directly into the gar den after danger of frost m a sunny location and fertile soil. The huge yellow flowers appear on 6 ft. stalks, and the centers swell out as the seeds develop. Binls are especially fond of sunflower seeds, and so are children, since the meaty ker nels have a nutty flavor. Strawflowers are a recent addition to the flqwer garden. ; Discovered growing wild in the meadows of Western Australia, they are easy-to grow. In addi tion to creating a magnificent garden display during summer, they can be dried to last all winter in dried flower arrange ments. Colors include crimson, (yellow, orange, pink and white. Veterans Administration Notes Editors Note: Veterans and their families are asking thou sands of questions concerning the benefits their Government provides for them through the Veterans Administration. Be low a re some representative queries. Additional information may be obtained at any VA office. Q-Is the Veterans Adminis tration cutting back on hospi tal care? A-On the contrary. An all high record of more than one million patients will be treated in fiscal year 1974. Because of advances in medical science and improvements in treatment techniques, hospital stays will be shorter and fewer patients will be in bed on an average day. Q-How can I apply for my special dividend which I hear the VA is paying to holders of World War II life insurance policies? A Sorry to disappoint you. but there is no special div idend VA pays regular dividends to veterans who have kept their World War II "V" prefixed National Service Life Insurance and World War I "K" prefixed United States Government Life Insurance policies. Dividends are paid on the anniversary date of each policy and no annlication is necessary. Q-Why is the Veterans Ad ministration's budget for fiscal vear 1974 being reduced? A-VAs budget is not being reduced. Overall expenditures will be some $300 million hi gher than in the current fiscal year. Men were born to lie, and women to believe them. -John Gay. If you have bearing strawberry plants, they should be fertilized now in eastern Carolina and the lower Piedmont; and late March in the upper Piedmont and mountain counties. Apply about two quarts of an 8-8-8 fertilizer per 100 feet of. row. Select a good day when the leaves are dry. Distribute the fertilizer evenly over the plants and brush from the leaves to prevent burning; Remember to mulch the plants to keep the berries clean when rip ening. Pine straw is probably beat bat clean grain straw may be used. Fertilize before applying the mulch. It would be a good idea to fertilize those pecan trees you have been neglecting. Use about two pounds of an 8-8-8 mixture per year of age until the trees come Into bearing. On bearing trees, apply three pounds per inch of tree diameter. The fertilizer may be broadcast evenly around the tree or it placed in boles 12-H inches deep nuns with a crowbar or as old car axle.
