Home accidents kill and
cripple more children under
the age of five than any dis
ease, according to Albert H.
Domm, M.D., child safety
specialist and medical director
of the Prudential Insurance
Company. V
Dr. Domm defined a home
accident as one which occurs
in the house, yard or neigh
borhood. "The cluld

falls from a
second story
balcony,

Dr. Albert a victim of a
H. Domm home acci
dent," Dr. Domm explained.
"These tragedies are almost
entirely preventable by care
ful planning, forethought su
pervision and education, he
said.
Dr. Domm appealed to par
ents to check each and every
room of the house as well as
neighborhood play areas for
safety hazards.
"Poisonous household sub
stances and medicines should
he kept in locked cabinets,"
he said. "Sharp instruments
which can seriously maim or
kill must be kept out of the
reach of the curious toddler."
Dr. Domm suggested fas
tening all windows securely
and putting gates at the bot
tom and top of stairways to
prevent injury from falls.
Doors leading to outside bal
conies should be locked.
For yard safety, Dr. Domm
urged parents to fence off a
protected play area for chil
dren. Dr. Domm also stressed the
importance of parental re
sponsibility for teaching good
safety habits

An important Black woman, for whom t have great
respect, said something a few days ago that got
me thinking.
What she said was, "Women weren't created to
walk behind their men, or ahead, but side by side."
And I thought, how many of our women walk
that way? How many are into their responsibilities
as a. woman? Their commitment to the stability
of the Black family unit?
True, theflires of romance may begin to burn
low. But that needn't cool the glow of caring, shar
ing, and growing together. Especially when chil
dren can learn from the love and guidance of
both parents.
When a woman walks side by side with her
man, she makes him neither slave nor competitor.
But rather, her companion. Someone to eifcourage
to take his place as head of the family. Someone to
provide the affection both she and her children
need.
If we could attune ourselves to these notions,
perhaps more Black men would feel the great
dignify of being a good husband and father, instead
of just someone around the house to help out with
the bills.
I remember reading something once that said,
"If you want him to be more of a man, try being
more of a woman."
Might be worth a try.

"In addition to hearing and
discussing papers based at least
in part on research in' the
National Archives", he said,
"those attending will have the
opportunity to visit some stack
areas and talk with specialists
in charge of records".

Alumni Boost Support of ECSU
Annual Fund Raising Campaign
Immediately following the
E I g h t y S e c o n d
Commencement, Chancellor
Marion D. Thorpe, President of
the Elizabeth City State
University Foundation,
announced that contributions
to the Annual Fund-Raising
Campaign continued on the
upward swing, especially
during the April 27 May 14
period. The continued upward
trend was made possible when
the General Alumni
Association presented a $3,000
gift to the Foundation.
However, the total alumni
contributions from the
association, local chapters, and
individual alumni exceeded
over $5,000, during the period.
Chancellor Thorpe indicated
that "This increased interest in
and support of ECSU is to be
commended". r
"In a national report on
voluntary support for public
higher education, the alumni of
ECSU were ranked second on
the honor roll of traditionally
black institutions, with their
contributions", Dr. Thorpe
reflected.
The Acting Executive
Director and Secretary of the
Foundation, Nathaniel C.
McNair, Jr., ECSU' Director of
Development, joined
Chancellor Thorpe in thanking
James R. Spence, Assistant
Director of Development -Alumni
Relations, and Willie B.
Spence, President of the
General Alumni Association,
for their leadership in helping
to communicate the critical
financial needs of ECSU to the

PORKERS' PROGRESS
The amount of vitamin H
(or biotin) in your hogs' diet
can have a great influence on
your bank account, to say
nothing of your "piggy bank."
Dermatitis, due to a biotin
deficiency, usually starts with
a slight redness on the back of
the ears, or top of the shoul
ders, then spreads to the rest
of the body. The skin be
comes dry and scaly, and then
scabs form. This stage of the
symptoms would probably not
be noticed under commercial
conditions, particularly with
the darker-haired breeds.
At a more advanced stage,
dermatitis covers much of the
body, and hooves begin to
crack. Usually the hind legs
are the first to be affected.
A cracked hoof is still only
a moderate biotin deficiency
symptom and would not be
noticed under commercial con
ditions. It can be noticed,
however, by the way the an
imal walks, as if its feet are
tender and sore. It is a stiff
legged walk and there is a sort
of spastic movement of the
hind legs. Actually, this stiff-hind-legged
walk can be seen
quite frequently at commercial
operations and may reduce the
price you get for your animals.
For a free copy of a new
booklet about vitamin H, write

If you want to preserve the
beauty of spring and early
summer flowers, now is the
time to trot out an old laundry
room standby to do the job.
Dried flower arrangements
have been a fascinating hobby
for many years and 20 Mule
Team Borax long has been
used as the principal blossom
preservative.
Here is the simple method
to follow:
Use a mixture of two parts
of the product, which is com
posed virtually of pure pow
dered borax crystals, to one
part of dry white sand or one
port borax and two parts corn
meal.
Be sure the flowers are dry.
Then place the blossoms in a
box on a layer of the mixture
and carefully sprinkle addi
tional mixture over the flow
ers. Make certain that the
petals are covered but not
crushed or bent. Cover the box
and store it at room tempera
ture for seven to 10 days.
At the conclusion of the
process you will have beauti
ful color flowers that, with
careful handling, should last
indefinitely.

the technique of flower pre
serving as well as many other
interesting usea of the borax
laundry product write for free
