Charles Johnson, M. D. and
H. Curtis Bowens, DDS, have
been chosen as presidents of
the Medical and Dental
Societies .of the, state. The
predominantly black societies
known as Old North State
Medical Society arid Old North
State Dental Society, as well as
the Old North State
Pharmaceutical Society, met
on June 5, 6,and 7, at the Sir
Walter Hotel in Raleigh.

Association, the American
Medical Association,
Durham-Orange Medical
Society and is a member of the
Chamber of Commerce. HI

Medicine Journal.
As head of the Old North
State Medical Society, Johnson
was elected for a two year
term. This organization is
state-wide and has more than
130 physicians in the group.
Johnson is married to the
former Carolyn Denton of
Little Rock. Arkansas and they
are the parents of two children,
Carla and Charles, Jr.
Dr. Johnson serves on the
staff of Duke Medical Center
and is Director of Medical
Services at Lincoln Hospital.

Dontemps passes
NASHVILLE - Arna
Bontemps, nationally known
author and critic, and
writer- in-residence at Fisk
University, died Monday night,
June 4, at Hubbard Hospital
after a heart attack
Bontemps, 70, who was
appointed last January as an
honorary consultant in
American cultural history to
the Library of Congress, was
librarian emeritus at Fisk
where he served from 1943-65.
He was a professor at the

To The NBC Board Of D irectors
William J. Kennedy III was
elected to the National
Broadcasting Company's Board
of Directors at its regular
monthly meeting recently, It
was announced by David C.
Adams, NBC Board Chairman.
A prominent business and civic
leader, Mr. Kennedy is
President of North Carolina
Mutual Life Insurance
Company of Durham.
Prior to assuming the
presidency of North Carolina
Mutual, one of the nation's
largest black-managed
companies, Mr. Kennedy had
been Senior Vice President of
the company, serving in that
capacity since 1969. He joined
North Carolina Mutual in
1950, became Controller in
1959 and Financial Vice
President in 1966.
Mr. Kennedy, who has been
a member of the RCA Board of
Directors since February of
this year, is also a director of
the Mechanics and Farmers
Bank of Durham; United
Durham, Inc.; Urban National
Corporation, Boston; and
Galaxy Fund, Inc., New York.
He holds a B. S. degree in
Business Administration from
Virginia State College, and M.
R A. from the University of
Pennsylvania's Wharton
School, and anothe" M. B. A.
from New York niversity. He
served as a lieutenant in the
Medical Administrative Corps
during World War II.
A native of Durham, Mr.
Kennedy has served as a
director of that city's Chamber
of Commerce and is the
immediate past chairman of
the Chamber's Human
Relations Committee. He is
also a member of the National
Association for the
Advancement of Colored
People and of the North
Carolina Society of Finahciaj
Analysts.
Mr. Kennedy is married to
bp former Alice C. Copeland.

Annual Meet of N. C. Funeral
Directors, Morticians Held Here
When the gavel of the
Funeral Directors and
Morticians Association of
North Carolina was called to
order by its president, Mrs.
Ernestine Scarborough Bynum,
more than 180 members were
in attendance at its 46th
annual meeting at the Durham
Hotel. Some 300 or more
delegates participated in the 3
day convention.
The theme for the annual
convention, as stressed this
year was "Togetherness' . Mrs.
Bynum called for the "spirit of
togetherness to bind the black
morticians of North Carolina
so closely that our association
may affect all humankind-
ideally and pragmatically".
This philosophy would radiate
both helpfulness as well as
utility in their services to
human beings.
Mrs. Bynum is the daughter
of the late John Clarence
Scarborough Sr. who founded
the Scarborough & Hargettt
Funeral Home in 1907. A new
location of the Scarborough
and Horgett Funeral Home is
presently under construction at
the corner of South Roxboro
and Dillard Streets. The

SAN FRANCISCO -(NBNS)
- President William R.
Tolbert, Jr. of Liberia has
arrived here for a 20-day visit
of the United States. Tolbert,
who has just left the
Organization of African Unity
meeting in Ethiopia, will pay
an official state visit to
President Nixon later in the
month.
He was greeted at the

(NBNS) - Elbert L. A Gutllory
has been appointed executive
director of the Maryland
Human Relations Commission
by Gov. Marvin Mandel.
Twenty-eight year old
Guillory succeeds Treadwell O.
Phillips, who left the $22,000 a
year post four months ago.
Guillory was an official of the
Pennsylvania Human Relations
Commission.

URBAN STAND
WASHINGTON -(NBNS)
-The federal
government's attitude toward
the poor under President
Nixon has moved from "benign
concern" to malignant
neglect", Georgia State
legislator Julian Bond told a
meeting of the National Urban
Coalition meeting here.
Although thi number of
persons living below the
poverty line Was cut, nearly in
half during the 1960's, Bond

Dr. Forte received the B. S.
degree at Fayetteville- State
College, M. A. and Ph. D. at
North Carolina Central
University. She has been on the
faculty of Saint Augustine's
College since 1966.
WASHINGTON- (NBNS) -Some
1.5 million aged, Mad,
and disabled persons will lose
their eligibility for food stamps
and dose to 150,000 others
will lose Medicaid medical
benefits under a new federal
guaranteed income plan which
will take effect on Jan. 1,
1974.
The Department of Health,
Education and Welfare revealed
that the new Supplemental
Security Income (SSI)
program, which will provide
$4.5 billion in federal and state
payments to 6.2 million
persons, will force about 1.5
million persons to lose various
benefits under the food stamp
program.
Between 100,000 and
150,000 will no longer receive
Medicaid benefits.
Under the new SSI program,
persons will receive a minimum
cash income of $130 a month
or per coupte.
