They could not comfortably wear shorts, pants, were embarrass ed by bathing suits and short dresses. Now, the relief they have been "weighting" for has finally come from France with body-shaping expert Madame Nicole Ronsard and her six point program. "Losing weight is not the point," contends Mme. The human involvement in allergic disease, however, is "tremendous" and "must be fsced," says Horace S. Baldwin, MD, founder of the Allergy Foundation of America, a national voluntary health agency which is now observing its 20th anniversary. Emphasizing the impact of allergic disease as s cause of "disability, death, and economic waste," Dr. Baldwin gives the following figures: An estimated 31 million Americans, 15 per cent of the total population, have one or more significant allergies. Some 22 million Americans are currently afflicted with either hayfever, asthma, or both; 8.6 million have asthma alone. For these 22 million, there are 5 million days lost from work, 7 million days lost from school, $62,061,000 annual cost for hospitalization. Thirteen million Americans have hayfever and dread the coming of summer and the sneezing, the stuffed-up running nose, the itching, swollen eyes. Treatment of allergies can be a very difficult matter, medical authorities agree. In the case of hayfever, doctors sometimes undertake desensitization treatment in advance of the season. For temporary relief, NTZ, a nasal arav containing an antihistamine ; and a decongestant, is one of the most frequently recommended medications, according to the National Therapeutic Disease Index, 1972. For all allergies, aside from specific therapy, every effort must be made to avoid or eliminate the allergen, Michael H. K. Irwin, MD, emphasizes in his recent Public Affairs Pamphlet, "What Do We Know About Allergies?" And looking after general health, getting enough sleep, a well-balanced diet, and exercise, are certainly important, too. Federal wants Fund Programs At Elizab. City Chancellor Marion D. Thome announced that notification of federal grants will now provide funds for Elizabeth City State University's DUO Program, duriiw 1973-74. The DUO Program, a part of HEW's funded TRIO package, awarded $70,000 for Upward Bound and $47,500 to provide for Soecial Services for Disadvantaged Students. The program will be directed by Joseph A. Dempsey, with Mrs. Addie G. Midgett serving as program coordinator. "Along with our other efforts, we are always pleased to be able to provide these programs for those disadvantaged students with potential, Dr. demonstrated Thorpe stated. Funds for will continue Upward Bound the program at ECSU for the third consecutive year, with 100 students from the 10-county Albermarle area having already been assisted, 49 of whom were admitted or have applied for admission to college. The program is designed to help high school students from low-income families to develop the skills and motivation necessary for success in college. Currently there are 50 Upward Bound students living on ECSU's campus, attending classes and participating in recreational, social and cultural activities. Fifteen of them are 10th graders who are enrolled for the first time. In addition, 22 students who were seniors last year are now taking regular college courses under Upward Bound's "Summer Bridge" Program The Special Services grant will enable ECSU to provide counseling, tutorial and other educational ser ines for 50 in-coming freshr.iat: students. The program is designed to help these students to remedy academic deficiencies, provide career guidance, and assist them in achieving their higher educational ambitions. Combining the two programs under the DUO umbrella will allow for a greater utilization of personnel and resources, at ECSU.
