Walker With Award For Distinguished Service Dr. LeRoy T. Walker, chairman of the Department of Physical Education and Recreation at North Carolina Central University, was awarded the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Achievement Award in a special ceremony Tuesday. In making the presentation, Chamber President J. B. Brame cited Walker's outstanding contributions in the world of international track and field. Walker, who became a part of the NCCU staff in 1945, was director of the highly successful Pan- Africa -II. S. A. International Track and Field meet held at Duke University in 1971, and was instrumental in the planning of the Martin Luther King International Freedom Games held in Durham last spring. In addition, he served as a member of the United States Collegiate Sports Council which selected American representatives to participate in the World University Games in Moscow last month. Walker is a graduate of UNC Students To Assist Minority Businesses CHAPEL HILL - When black businessmen approach Ralph Hunt for advice on starting up a new venture, he's likely to tell them that the three "M's" for survival are "Management, Marketing, and Money"- and that if you can get the first two going for you, the money will come forth. Hunt is director of an organization that has been helping blacks and other economically disadvantaged groups get the three "M's" together for more than 30 yean- the Durham Business and Professional Chain. The Chain was one of the first Southern chapters of the National Business League that Booker T. Washington started in the 1930's as a self-help organization for the black community. It earned another "first" Durham and Chapel Hill Baha'is To Observe World Peace Day The Baha'is of Durham and Chapel Hill will observe World Peace Day at the Forest Theatre, University of North Carolina Campus, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on Sunday, September 16th at 12:00 p.m, Members of the Faith in 4,761 American cities, towns, and villages will also observe the day. Purpose of World Peace Day is to spread the recognition of America's spiritual distiny to raise the standard of peace in the world. Holshouser Names Durham Attorney to Crime Commission Governor James E. Holshouser, Jr. has announced the appointment of Black D u rham attorney, Clarence Malone, Jr. to North Carolina's Crime Study Commission. Malone, a 1951 graduate of North Carolina Central University, presently serves as Secretary of the Southern Lawyers Association and is president of the George H. White Bar Association. The 1973 North Carolina Central Assembly passed a bill which called for the creation of the Crime Study Commission to review present legislation and make future legislative recommendations to combat crime in the state. Horton, Special Assistant to the Governor for Minority Affairs, said Malone's Appointment is "in keeping with Governor Holshouser's campaign pledge to insure that all citizens of the state of North Carolina, regardless to race, creed or color, would have representative input in the affairs of state government." Buildings, long vacated, as well as numerous Junk cars will be removed as well. Lt. E. A. Allen, head of the police department's Human Relations division and Joe Becton, director of the Human Relations Commission, said several city departments have agreed to participate in removing junked cars and tearing down old houses and other buildings that serve as a sanctuary for vagrants and other "hang-outs" to sleep. Allen said the Casual Employment Center has added to the crime problem in the small three block business district from the 300 area to the 500 block of the Pettigrew Street area. The area has been observed, surveyed and it is reported that men who frequent the area actually will run when employment overtures are made. Marvin Gooch, organizer and operator of the center for aboi't three years, agreed also that the non-profit center has become a hangout for some undesirables in spite of its constructive goals to upgrade the life of the men. Many of the merchants feel that drinking is the major problem and something should be done to alleviate the easy access to such beverages. President Designates September 22 as Employees Day President Terry Sanford designates September 22, 1973 as Duke Employees' Day. This is the day that the Duke University football team plays Washington University. Duke's Day is dedicated to the bi-weekly employees of the University and Medical Center.
