Goes Out Of Business NEW ORLEANS: New Orleans was once called the "Capitol of Negro-owned Insurance". In 1930 there were in the City of New Orleans sixteen companies. True all were industrial life insurance companies selling mostly health and accident insurance with small old line life up to $ 1000. But they were legitimate insurance companies serving hundreds of thousands of black folk in the state. This past week the tenth company folded and went out of business passing ownership to whites. Guard IVomenJn-Acfon Cefebrotefm NEW YORK A 20 year-old City College student Postal employee has become the first black woman enlisted in the New York Army National Guard. Ms. Deborah McDowell was sworn in recently at the headquarter offices of the 569th Transportation Battalion, descendant of Harlem's 369th Infantry, one of the earliest National Guard units. Participating in the swearing-in ceremonies were Major General Francis W. Greenlief, Chief, National Guard Bureau; Brigadier General Robert F. Murphy, Adjutant General, New York Army National Guard; Colonel Samuel W. Recruitment and Training Program (R3"P,1NC!.), New York City will conduct a one-year program in 1 2 states to help prepare more than 1 ,600 minority group youths RoupM apprenticeship tests in construction, industrial and shipyard trades; and to counsel them as the recruits move through their training. At least 40 percent of those recruited will be Vietnam veterans. fifty members of minority groups in Durham, North Carolina will be helped to prepare for Apprenticeship entry examinations. Nationally., some 345 minority group members will be recruited and placed as journeymen. All shipyard-trades will be with Ingalls Ship-building Corporation in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Ingalls also has been conducting on-the-job training programs for the past six years, with the aid of Labor Department funds. Brennan pointed out that the pioneering effort of RTP dates back to when it was called the Workers Defense League and said it "has opened the door for many minority youths to enter the skilled trades." Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, point up the values of the arts, emphasizing that community and grass-roots effort must be used to involve all in the many programs of the cultural arts, by letting the arts become a part of everybody's life. M. Harris, founder and president, on October 12th at 2:00 p.m. in the College Auditorium. Speaker for the occasion will be Pat Holshouser, wife of Governor Jim 1 !; i m er. A native of Asheville, the first lady of North Carolina received her high school education at Appalachian High School and later attended Wake Forest University; North Carolina School of Nursing; and was granted the B.S. Degree from Appalachian State University. She is very active in civic and community affairs throughout the state. School Board Sayt Bond Money To Be Used for Renovations Durham City Board of Education has announced that it planned to use its share of a proposed $300 million state school bond issue to finance the renovation of existing schools. Under the proposal no new schools would be built Vil.h the expected $3.1 million the city school system would receive if the bond Issue is approved by the state's voters on November 6, says board members. Other action on Monday night included the proposal to set up an employer's advisory committee to work with school officials on improving career and vocational training education in the schools. It also voted to allow school buses to be used for field trips, to raise the wages of custodial and maintenance workers, and to hold meetings on the second and fourth Monday nights of each month. The National Urban League, NAACP, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, United Negro College Fund, National Council of Negro Women, CORE, National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs, and many other groups are working to encourage young people to apply for grant monies. Angela is an elementary education major and a member of the Delta Sigma Theta TMfciMllUll , 1 . i Afro-American History Group To Hold 58th Annual Conclave Washington, D.C. -The 58th Annual Convention of the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History will open October 17th at the Commodore Hotel, New York City, to run through October 21st with speakers and workshop leaders from a broad area of American life scheduled to appear before delegates from throughout the United States and several foreign countries. Approximately 3,000 persons are expected to attend the sessions, according to the Association's President , Dr. Andrew F. Brimmer, a Governor of the Federal Reserve System, and Dr. J. Rupert Picott. an official of the National Education Assoication, who is ASALH Executive Director, both of Washington, D. C. The two leaders expressed the belief that the 1973 session will be the largest annual meeting of the body since its inception in 1915, "evidencing a renewed and in depth interest in Black History." Formal opening of the conference will be at 8:00 PM on Thursday.
