Higher Organization Lists 19 Reasons Why Pres. Nixon Should Resign The AFL-CIO recently launched a nationwide campaign for the immediate impeachment of President Nixon. A full-page statement, entitled "Why Richard M. Nixon Must Be Impeach edNow", will appear in this week's edition of the federation's official newspaper, the AFL-CIO News, published later. The statement, designed to be used as a leaflet for mass distribution at plant gates, union meetings and membership mailings, note that the AFL-CIO convention voted unanimously on October 22 to call for the resignation or impeachment of President Nixon. "Since them," the 13.5 million member labor federation adds, "Mr. Nixon has given clear evidence he does not intend to resign. "The AFL-CIO therefore calls for his immediate impeachment." The AFL-CIO listed 19 reasons why President Nixon "must be impeached--now:" "He has caused an erosion of public confidence in our democratic system of government." "He instituted in the name of national security a plan which violated civil liberties through domestic political surveillance, espionage, wiretapping, burglary, eavesdropping, opening of mail, and military spying on civilians." "He created a special and personal secret police, answerable only to the White House, to operate totally outside the constraints of law." "He and his subordinates interfered with the freedom of the press- which our Constitution guarantees - by means of wiretaps, FBI investigations, and threats of punitive action." "He secretly recorded conversations in his office without advising participants in those conversations that they were being recorded. He then sought to deny the evidence on those tapes to the courts." "He has violated the Constitution of the United States and his sworn obligation (See AFL-CIO 7A) HEW Rejeds N.C. Education Plan WASHINGTON - The Department of Health, Education and Welfare recently rejected higher education desegregation plans submitted by nine states under terms of a federal court order. Peter E. Holmes, director of HEWs Office for Civil Rights, said the states are being told in a series qf lenthly letters that they must resubmit new plans within 90 days. The letters were sent to Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Virginia, be said. Holmes said no formal determination has been made on Maryland's desegregation plan, which was submitted late because the state was concerned that compliance might jeopardize its black colleges. "We're telling the states that while they're generally on the right track in dealing with the issue, their submissions so far fall far short of being (See HEW 7A) I As Last Year 153,000 gallons. Attempts to obtain relief from various sources have met with no results, "and if no additional fuel is obtained, the hospital would be without fuel for 70 days," Simek said. In a letter to Love, Franc J. Greaney, administrator St. Francis Hospital, Hartfor Conn., said, "The one ghastl scene we would not want t confront in our country-and we should avoid at any cost-is that of a hospitalized patient's (See HOSPITALS 7A) CHICAGO-Some U.S. hospitals have been told by their fuel suppliers that they will not be able to oMkI natural gas between October 1 of this year and June of next year, while others have been told they may not be able to even obtain the same amounts of fuel heating d they received last winter, according to reports received by the American Hospital Association (AHA) ffdi hospitals across the nation. Hospitals located in the midwest, northeast and west coast will be particularly bard hit said John Alexander McMahon, AHA president. McMahon recently made a strong appeal to John Love, director of the White House Office of Energy Policy, asking for priorities for hospitals in the mandatory distribution of fuel supplies. "Unless priorities are established, hospitals will be limited in their ability to treat patients in adequately heated rooms and have energy resources for treatment and dietary purposed as well as for the administration and Sterilization of hospitals supplies and,,, equipment," McMahon said in his letter. ' The administrator of Home Hospital, Lafayejtte, Indiana, Franklin E. Simek, told the A, "On August 31 the tspital was advised by the Indiana Gas Company that it estimates curtailment of our supply for approximately 85 days from October 1, 1973t through June 30, 1974. During last year's heating season the supply was curtailed and the stand-by fuel, 2 fuel oil, was used as a source by the hospital for 16.7 days." Simek said that five of his six suppliers would not quote a price to him for 2 fuel oil, and the firm that did would only guarantee the same amounts he obtained last year, which totaled 28,650 gallons. He said, his requirements call for GOV. LOWERS N. CAROLINA SPEED LIMITS ORDERING 55-MILE SPEED LIMIT RALEIGH - Gov. Jim Holshouser has decided to lower North Carolina's highway speed limits to 55 miles per hour in an effort to conserve fuel, the Associated Press learned recently. Holshouser was to announce his decision at an afternoon news conference. Usually reliable sources said Holshouser could drop the speed limit to 55 m.p.h. by an administrative order, but probably would seek legislative authorization in January to cut the maximum speed back to 50 m.p.h. In the meantime, Holshouser was expected to order all state-owned vehicles to reduce their speed immediately. North Carolina's statewide speed limit is 55 m.p.h now but greater speeds are permitted on most of the primary highway system. The conservation move included plans to use (See SPEED 7A) Durham City and County Schools Reply to Desegregation Suit Hi Attorneys for the Durham city schools have filed their proposed findings of fact and conclusions of law in federal court in response to the motion for "interim relief" requested by lawyers for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund in the desegregation suit against the city and county schools, according to Marshall T. Spears, attorney for the city schools. Spears said a hearing was held in Greensboro Oct. 25 on the "interim relief motion, at which time Chief District Judge Eugene A Gordon directed the parties involved to file their proposed findings of fact and conclusions of law with the U. S. Middle District Court. The "interim relief is being sought pending a final decision in the desegregation suit. The suit is asking one of three rulings: Extend the boundaries of the Durham city school unit to include all areas in the Durham city limits, known as the 4 'city-out" area. Order the merger of the city schools with the county schools. Order the assignment of pupils interchangeably between the two school systems. Spears said a second hearing on the "interim relief motion would have to be held, but said a date for that hearing has not been set. Abemathy Calk for Amnesty; SQC Launches New Program ATLANTA - On April 4, 1967, In Riverside Church in New York City, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. publicly denounced the policy of this Nation for its illegal and immoral role in the Viet-Nam conflict. One year later he was shot down by America's Violence in Memphis, Tennessee. When Dr. King said this Nation was engaged in an illegal, unjust and immoral war in Southeast Asia many people in this Nation critized him for doing so. Not only did he urge this Government to end its occupation of the Vietnamese land, but he urged young men who were faced with the possibility of being drafted to fight in this war not to submit themselves to be taken off 10,000 miles into the jungles of Southeast Asia but to register as Conscientious Objectors and refuse to fight in this ungodly war, and to submit themselves to another more moral and just war here in the United States, the war against Racism, Militarism and Economic Exploitation. These three evils were worth dying for and he urged the Nation to fight until the war against these three evils was won.
