GM Makes Possible Loans To More
Than 100 minority Businessmen
DETROIT - General
Motors' loans to minority
businessmen have reached
100, it was announced
today by Roger B. Smith,
GM executive vice
president.
Smith said that
since 1970 GM has made
possible the loan of more
than $13.7 million to
minority businesses across
the country.
Of this amount, over
$2.4 million was provided
through GM's Motor
Enterprises. One-third of
this was a direct
investment by GM and the
other two-thirds came
from the Small Business
Administration and was
guaranteed by GM. This
amount in turn generated
about $11.3 million from
other lending institutions.
Motor Enterprises is a
wholly-owned GM
subsidiary and was one of
the "first Minority
Enterprise Small Business
Investment Companies
(MESBIC) licensed under
the Small Business Act of
1958.
. Smith said GM's
100ih MESBIC loan was
made to James M. Coates,
an American Indian who is
president of the Cherokee
Paper Company in Detroit.
He also announced that
the 99th loan was awarded
to Herman L. Burton, a
black businessman who
established Burton's
Diversified, Inc., a carpet
sales and cleaning
company in Marion, Ind.
The 100 minority
business that have received
GM loans are situated in
13 states and 43 cities in
the U.S., and provide job

93,875 new passenger cars
and commercial vehicles
during the first ten days of
January, Mack W. Worden,
vice president in charge of
the Marketing Staff,
reported today.
The total includes
76,695 passenger cars and
17,180 commercial
vehicles.
General Motors provides
managerial and technical
assistance to the sponsored
minority businessmen. GM
purchases products from
some of these minority
businessmen under its
minority supplier program.

"Passenger car sales by
General Motors dealers
during the first period of
January were nearly 80
percent above the
depressed levels of a year
ago," Mr. Worden said.
"This sales performance
is evidence that the
momentum built up in the
fourth quarter of 1975 has
carried over into the new
calendar year," he added.
