One activist minister, Rev.
Leon . White, called for aboli
tion of the HRC last Novem
ber following a published
account . revealing previous
HRC leadership had with
held information that could
have exonerated the Wilming-.
ton 10. The Wilmington 10 are
serving long prison terms for
conviction of firebombing a
grocery in Wilmington during
the 1971 vigilante attack. The
defendants claim they were
in a nearby church at the
time of the fire. Both of the
state's witnesses against the
defendants have since "said
that they lied during the trial
for favors from the prosecuting
attorneys. All these claims
will be aired again, with the
HRC's . role likely to be
brought up, at a post-conviction
hearing in Burgaw County
in May of tnis year. ,
