AFIBHAffl WANTS TO HEAR FROM YOU In Coso of Rc?o, or Attempted Rapo, Call 800432-6830 If you've ever been raped, or the victim of an attemp ted rape, call 800-432-6830; 1 Aftermath wants to hear .'from you. I y -.i For the first time in North Carolina, authorities hope to determine the actual number of rapes and other sexual assaults in the state, thanks to a $25,000 federal grant, made recently to the N. C. Council on the Status of Women. , ' - The grant, from Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) funds, makes possible a four: month survey of all women who have ever been, the, victims of sexual assault, regardless of when it took place.' 3 Beginning July 25, victims of rape or attempted rape ; or other sexual assaults are asked to call the Aftermath office toll free, and without giving their names, answer a few general questions, such as whether they reported the , attack; If not, why; whether they knew the at t acker ;undef ; what circumstances the attack occured; what type of medical assistance they received at the time; whether their alleged attacker was ever brought to trial; and their own feelings about the aftermath of the incident. Miriam J. Dorsey, executive director of the Council on the Status of Women, said no statistics are now avail able on unreported rapes in North Carolina.."We have no way of knowing the extent of the prqblem of rape," she ; said, "because many women may not report their attacks; The reports may just be the tip of the iceberg , v Last year, according to the N. C. Police Information Network, 600 actual rapes were reported, in addition to 207 attempted rapes. Other attempted rapes may be re- 'ported simply as an attack or an assault on a female, i which are lesser charges. "The survey will help us sub- A stantlate the extent of the problem we have here," said : Ms. Dorsey. . In addition, to establishing a more accurate count of sexual assaults, and attempted assaults, project adminis trators hope to find out reasons why the incidents are not always reported. In turn, they' hope to create, a more positive attitude toward reporting,' thus eventually limit-, ing this type of crime. . ' ''--)-' t - ; Although Aftermath is a survey and not a counseling service, rape victims needing help will be referred to other . agencies which do offer this service. , ' r tAT., JULY 23, 1377 THE CAROLINA 1V:.ZI - 7 TAU GAHGA DELTA SORORITY, inc.
