Untied Holy Church Rebukes Governor H unf (CCNS) At it's 8th annual convocation, the Western N. C. District of the United Holy Church of America appealed to Gover nor Hunt to commute the sentences o .the Wilmington Ten. -Calling the case a "mis carriage of justice," churih leaders strongly condemned the governor's refusal to "speak out with boldness," linking that refusal to politi cal considerations surround ing the "pending referendum that would allow the gover nor to succeed himself." . r; The conviction of the Ten for arson and conspiracy arising from social distur bances in Wilmington during 1972 has prompted a number of local and national leaders and organizations to request intervention in the case. Despite direct appeals, Gover nor Hunt has remained ada mant in his refusal to inter vene in the case. The state ment by the church group marks the first time the (Wilmington Ten case has been tied with the succession issue. iThe controversial referendum is scheduled to be presented ;to N. This statement was apparently in response to the outbreak of lawlessness which occurred in the ghetto areas of New York during the recent blackout. On the local level, the Convocation spoke out against what they term, "The apparent efforts of the State of North Carolina to under mine the status and pro grams of the traditionally black colleges in the state." The United Holy Church of America, Inc., founded in 1886, is one of the his torical, classical denomina tions that grew out of the holiness-pentacostal move- ment around the turn of the century. Fisher'-s Memorial in Durham where the Convo cation was held is built on the homesite of the late C. C. Craig, one of the founders and incorporators of the church.
