of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill for the 1977-78 academic

In makine the announce
ment, Taylor indicated Ren-
wick's responsibility will oe
"to advise and assist the
chancellor in the implementa
tion of Phase II of the Re
vised North Carolina State
Plan for the Further Elimi
nation of Racial Duality in
Public Hisher Education
which was adopted by the

"The main thrust of my
iob will be recruitment,"
Renwick says, roy i ll also oe
working to keep students in
school once they ; get here,
Dossiblv using special coun
seling and tutoring when
necessary."
Recruiting black students
is becoming increasingly diffi
cult, Renwich says. "In 1969,
- .... .
I was the first full time DiacK
admissions officer in the
state, and UNC-CH had no
competition in its recruiting
efforts. Now every predomi
nantly white institution ' is
actively seeking the same stu
dents we are. We are all Koine
out for the top black students
in the state " he said.
This vear. UNC-CH is wel
coming 235 black freshmen,
which is up slightly from the :
194 of last year. Renwick
says the recent HEW sugges
tion of a ISO percent mino
rity enrollment increase over:
the next 5 years is unrealistic.
Renwick will continue as
assistant dean of the College
of Arts and Sciences. He has
developed an advisory pro
gram to provide academic and r
personal counseling for mino
rity students. He is currently
active in ' a pre-orientation
program for new black stu-

"The appointment as spe

and I'm honored" Renwick
stated.
