Jones to the position of Fice Chancellor for Su dent Development The appointment was ap nroved at about the same time Governor Hunt announ ced the appointment of Mr. Jones as a member of the State Parole Commission. Mr. Jones officially assumed his position on the Parole Com mission on Julv 18. 1977. Before leaving Fayetteville State University for his new duties in Raleigh, Mr. Jones renuested a leave of absence from his position as Chief Student Attain Utncer ana Professor of History. The Chancellor subsequently re commended to the President of the University of North Carolina that Mr. Jones be granted a one year leave of absence to extend tnrougn June 30, 1978. The Uian cellor announced today mat with the concurrence of Pre sident Friday, the Board of Governors approved, on Mon day, August 22, 1977, the recommended leave of ab sence for Vice Chancellor Jones. According to Chancellor Lyons, a committee, com oosed of faculty, staff and students, will be appointed soon to recommend an interim reolacement for Vice Chancellor Jones during the period of his official leave. Renwick has been appoint ed special assistant to the chancellor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for the 1977-78 academic -year, Chancellor Ferebee Tay lor has announced. In makine the announce ment, Taylor indicated Ren- wick's responsibility will oe "to advise and assist the chancellor in the implementa tion of Phase II of the Re vised North Carolina State Plan for the Further Elimi nation of Racial Duality in Public Hisher Education which was adopted by the Board of Governors on Aug 71." "The main thrust of my iob will be recruitment," Renwick says, roy i ll also oe working to keep students in school once they ; get here, Dossiblv using special coun seling and tutoring when necessary." Recruiting black students is becoming increasingly diffi cult, Renwich says. "In 1969, - .... . I was the first full time DiacK admissions officer in the state, and UNC-CH had no competition in its recruiting efforts. Now every predomi nantly white institution ' is actively seeking the same stu dents we are. We are all Koine out for the top black students in the state " he said. This vear. UNC-CH is wel coming 235 black freshmen, which is up slightly from the : 194 of last year. Renwick says the recent HEW sugges tion of a ISO percent mino rity enrollment increase over: the next 5 years is unrealistic. Renwick will continue as assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He has developed an advisory pro gram to provide academic and r personal counseling for mino rity students. He is currently active in ' a pre-orientation program for new black stu- , dents. - ., ...
