Museum of Hi tory, Department of Cultural 'Resources., v'V'r '.v'f.'y 'intellectual Reawakening 1835-1860," an r exhibition containing a fully operational 1 840s era printship, depicts j one, aspect of the reawaken ing of North, Carolina from ! the conditions ! which 3 had earned for her the label "the Rip Van Wfiikle State." A Raleigh printer, Henry Poole, was on hand Monday to operate the press for a pre- view showing for exhibit co sponsors, members of, the N.C- Press Associations; the donors of the press, Publisher Rachel Rivers-Coffey of THE WATAUGA DEMOCRAT, and other dignitaries. , ! " - The cast-iron flatbed press, made by R, Hoe and Com pany, of New York (a firm still , in operat io n ) was pur chased by THE WATAUGA DEMOCRAT in 1887 or 1888 and shipped to Lenoir where it was loaded aboard ai wagon pulled by four mules which strained and struggled, to get the ,1800 pound bur- , den up the rugged North Car olina mountains to Boone. There it remained, printing every day, according Jo Mrs. Coffey. However, the . old ' press's load was lightened slightly when power: presses came into use. and was used 'mainly for proofs. In 1966, the venerable machine ! was ' retired . to the "cobwebs of, the basement," she. said. .The press has been faithr fully restored J td : like-new : conditfon by museum conser vator Paul Mears. The press can accommodate page sizes to 22 inches by 36 inches and. is capable of printing approxn mately two pages a minute. New ' leather straps move the bed under the platen as the rounce handle is turned, Mears explained, with the operator standing to the left of the 'machine.;, "This was back-breaking work," he said. " "and usually relegated to the printer's devil (apprentice)." , The printship, which "shows all the equipment for' ? a full Working shop including 'lypejtype cases, inking roller , and inking slab, is designed .'to depict the printing me-' thods used in the state dur ing the mid-1 9th century, ac cording to John Ellington. . museum administrator, j Al . that time. North Carolina saw a sizeable increase in the number of newspapers pub- , hshed, in die number of books printed and authors writing, and bills in the legis-v '' latu re providing for schools to reduce illiteracy. In addition, a collage fl- - lustrating the variety and scope of the printing possi ble on the press is on view, with such items as broad sides, newspapers and church publications.
