Lattimore as the univer sity's new head football coach. Lattimore resigned last spring as head football coach at Morgan State Uni versity in Baltimore. Morgan State, like N.C. Central, is a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Lattimore was to meet with the NCCU football tearr Tuesday night as his first official act as the head coach. "Coach Lattimore has a remarkable record of assqT clatioivwith .championship" football programs," Silva said. "His first year at Morgan, 1976, saw him win the MEAC co-championship, the MEAC Coach of the Year Honor, and the Pittsburgh Courier Coach of the Year Title. "His service as defensive coordinator of the NCCU football team form 1969 to 1971 included the uni versity's 7-1-1 champion ship season, the invita tion to the NCCAA-sanc-tioned Broadv 'V Bowl, and the best defer, "tistics on the East Coast." Lattimore was assistant football coach and assistant professor of education at NCCU from 1969 to 1971. He left NCCU to serve as assistant head foot ball coach at Texas Southern University. He has also been an assistant coach and track coach at his alma mater, Jackson State College in Jackson, Mississippi. He was also head coach of champ ionship teams at three Miss issippi high schools (Carthage, Mississippi High School, Travillion High School in Hattiesburg, and Hickory, Mississippi High School, as well as at Utica Junior College in Utica, Mississippi. Lattimore is 45 years of age, a native of Jackson, Mississippi, a grade of Piney Woods, Mississippi High School, and an alumnus of Jackson State College, where he participated in football, baseball, and track. He holds a B.S. degree in health and physical education from Jackson State and a M.S. degree in physical education from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Lattimore replaces Ray Greene, who resiged the NCCU coaching post Mon day. "We were fortunate that we knew of Coach Latti more's availability, that the university and Coach Latti- 14 v (3' r, l art WDUR RUNNERS IN SICKEL CELL JOGATHON - Stated on bottom row at left it Chris Cobb, announcer at WDUR along with WDUR runners at NCCLTi Sic kit Call Jogathon. Four days before the jogathaon, WDUR began broadcasting requests for pledges for each lap from its "listeners. All three WDUR teams completed over 100 laps and therefore received almost SI 000 in pledges for the Sickle Cell Syndrome Program. "Our primary concern is fairness to the football team and the football pro gram," Silva said. "Coach Greene left before spring practice had ended. Coach Lattimore's appointment will enable the team to Ret to know their new coach be fore the start of the 1979 season." Silva said the university's first contact with Lattimore was made after the athletic administration was inform ed bv another school that the other school was ne gotiating a contract with Coach Greene. A Look itii'o 0EAC Track 1979 BY LARRY BARBER South Carolina State has already captured the foot ball and wrestling champion ships for this academic year, and has an athirst eye on the track and field crown. - ;Th Mid-Eastern Athletic Confewnccmdves Its meet to the campus of Morgan State 'in Baltimore, Mary land this season, and a few changes are in effect. The 1500 and 3000-meter Water Falls (Steeplechases) will not be an entered vent, and the two-mile run (3000-meter) has been can celled in favor of the three mile (5000-meters). South Carolina State's Bulldogs are two-year defending chamions, and a third crowning is well within their grasp. They return a veteran group composed of six seniors, ten juniors, one sophomore and four freshmen. Charles Burgess, a 9.3, 100-yard sprinter, will be missed in the speed races, but they have Al Golden, Nate Rivers, Derrick Harris and Rocky CumminRham back to burn the track. Int the distance runs, Robert Dix and Ivan Castrillo will be defending their one -year records. Dbc ran the 1500-meter in 4:05.2, and Castril lo did the 3000 in 9:03.4, but will challenge three miles this year. Phil Murphy, who broke the shot put record last year with a toss of 541 and 1978 javelin winner Ezekiel Goode, will give coach Robert Johnson supremacy in the power of events. There is an interesting statistic connected with the Delaware State Track Team. It won the 1976 MEAC Championship, but of the other five; the Hor nets have always been second place finishers. There was no championship in 1975. Joe Burden has coached the Delaware State thinclads throughout their MEAC existence, but is hard pressed to continue a good showing this year. With the loss of Larry Savage, Mike Harrison, and Frank White; he will rely on one senior and three sophomores. Eugne Stewart, the senior, long jumps and triple jumps, James Weal is a classy sprinter, while Nath aniel Nelal and Ronnie Merritt merit recognition in the shot put and discus. - Howard Urrfeflty,ir head track coach, William Moultrie, is experiencing rebuilding pains since losing seven seniors, four of which are All-Americans. His lone consolation for a proven returnee is All American senior Michael Archie. Thirteen freshmen make up 65 per cent of the team. Moultrie's stregths last year were the distance relays, and his Bison will concentrate on that again this campaign. Leonard Braxton, who coaches the women as well as the men, is only in his second year at Morgan State, but expects great things out of his squads. The women's mile relay team has already provided Morgan with worldly acclaim. Thejr 3:44.2 time in the Pirnceton Univer sity Women's Development Meet, December 17, 1978 broke an American and Collegiate record set by them on February 26, 1978 of 3:45.1, and tied the world mark set by the 1976 Florida Track Club. A-6r the men involved in the MEAC Champion ship Meets, he said, "We are steadily on the move. The year before I got here, Morgan scored only 8 points, but last year we placed fourth with 57. Our strength should come in the speed races led by Neville Hodge." Billy Cox, high jump er; Andre Wicham, discus and shot; and Derrick Campers, pole vault; should fare well. Others returning are: Jerry Molyneaux, Jimmy Kidd and Herman Petion. The A&T Aggies are op timistic about their 1979 track team escpecially after a fine performance during the Florida A&M Relays earlier this campaign.
