Mrs. Alma Steele and Mrs. Elva P. DeJarmon were honored by the North Carolina Depart ment of Human Resources with Certificates of Recognition for their con tribution as Volunteers to improve the quality of life for North Carolinians on May 9, at a reception held at the Museum of Art, Raleigh at 2 p.m. Mrs. Steele has worked diligently to aid the Han dicapped in Durham and serves on Boards of Operation Breakthrough, Housing Authority Coun cil, and McDougald Ter race Tenants Steering Committee. Mrs. DeJarmon has served on several govern mental and civic boards. She currently serves as Chairman of the Durham County Mental Health Area Board, and is a member of the Area Board Chairman and Area Directors Association. Mrs. DeJarmon also represents Area Board Chairmen on the North Carolina Central Region Continuing Education Committee. Speakers for the occa sion included Dr. Sarah Morrow, Secretary of Human Resources, Mrs. Carolyn Hunt, wife of Governor Hunt, and Ms. Judith Lund, Director of Volunteer Services for the State. Black Women Atty’s Meet In Washington “The Black Woman At torney and the Black Family” is the theme of the sixth annual conven tion of the National Association of Black Women Attorneys (NABWA) to be held May 17-20 in Washington, D.C. at the Sheraton Park Hotel. The convention will feature seminars on such topics as Relationships Between Black Men and Black Women; Energy; Politics; The Black Child and the International Year of the Child; Bakke, Weber and Sears The Economic Impact on the Black Family; and Student Concerns; Law School Survival and Placement and Continuing Problems in Admissions to the Bar. D.C. Superior Court Judge Annice McBridge Wagner will be the keynote speaker at the NABWA awards lun cheon on May 19th. This year’s NABWA award recipients are: Otis Smith, General Counsel of General Motors, Equal Employment Opportunity Award; Marion Wright Edelman, Director of the Children’s Defense Fund, Distinguished Service Award; and Mrs. Andrew Young, Chairman of the National Commission on the International Year of the Child, NABWA Presi dent’s Award. NABWA will also pre sent its second scholarship award to the black female law student submitting the best essay on the conven tion theme: “The Black Woman Attorney and The Black Family.” According to NABWA BABY SHOWER GIVEN Mrs. Barbara Rogers Harrington was the guest of honor at a baby shower given on May 12, at 1311 Tucker Street.
