BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS CLUB
On May 14th at 7 p.m. the Better Homes and Gardens
Club met at the home of Gardener Frances Watson 411
Cecil St., with Gardener Helen Brown, vice president,
presiding. The devotion was led by Gardener Magnolia
Eings. Prayer ws led by Gardner Beulah Hill.
The Highlight of the evening was the evaluation of
entries in a recent flower show. A blue ribbon and two
white ribbons was awarded to Frances Watson, and a
yellow ribbon to Louise Jenkins. The members were ex
cited over a planned trip to Cherokee, N.C. where we
will visit a museum, a shopping area, a pageant,
Asheville, Naggie Valley, Biltmore House and take a
garden tour. After the business session, the members en
joyed a repast. Members present were: Gardeners
Beulah Hill, Catherine Page, Annie Creen, Thomasenia
Shaw, Louise Jenkins, Lenora Hooker, Gladys
Dawkins, Helen Brown, Magnolia Eings, Frances Wat
son and Carrie Vereen. Gardener Carrie Vereen thanked
the hostess for a pleasant evening.
THE LAMPLIGHTER CLUB
OF THE HAYESTOWN COMMUNITY
The Lamplighter Club of the Hayestown Community
met on May 20 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas
Royster, 519 East End Avenue. Business began with the
election of new officers for 1980. We also discussed the
celebration of our 20th Anniversary to be held at
Orange Grove Baptist Chruch on East End Avenue at 6
p.m. Members present were: Mesdames Josephine
Lassister, Louise Caple, Ruth Harris, Annie Daye,
Janet Allen, Alice Carwick, OUie Ray, EUie Lee, Hester
Brown, Annie Webb, Delia Hubbard, Louise Lee,
Odessa Flake, Bessie Barringer, Thomas Royster, Edna
Royster, Lillie Owens, Leona Pettiford and visitor,
Master Earl Brown.
LYON PARK ROSE GARDEN CLUB ' .'4
Lyon Park Rose Garden Club meet at J.J. Henderson ':
Center at 807 Duke Street, Mrs. M.W. Webb led the
devotions and the president, Mrs. Margaret Milligan,
presided. All committees reported and the ribbons from
the May 6th flower show were received.
Members present were Gardeners:
Mesdames M.W. Webb, Celestine Cunningham, Arlene, .
Mebane, Margaret Milligan, Catherine Shout, Hallie
Crews, Sophorine Green, Mattie R. Canty, Josephine .

THE FRIENDLY CIRCLE CLUB ;
The Friendly Circle Club of St. Mark A.M.E. Zion ;
Church held its monthly meeting with Mrs. Florence'
Littlejohn 410 Lawson Street. The meeting opened with
the singing of "Just As I Am", afterwhich, the minutes
were read and approved. Mr. Ruth Mitchell, a visitor to
the club, gave an inspiring talk which was enjoyed by
all. After the business session the hostess, Mrs. Little
john, and her daughter, Jackie, served a delicious din
ner to the following members: Mesdames Sarah
Cameron, Juanita Barnes, Elizabeth Brown, Hattie
Geer, Lena Thompson, Dazel Stevens, Margaret Bum
pass, Helen McNeil, Ruth Mitchell, and W.L. Thomp
son. Mrs. Hattie Geer thanked the hostess for a most
unforgetable evening, The next meeting will be with?

Dt. Mary E. Young, presided. Mt. Calvary Christian
Chruch Choir furnished them music, directed by Dt.
Ruth Singleton. The Imperial Deputy of North
Carolina, Dt. Adeline Spaulding, and Imperial
Treasurer, Dt.. Mary Pamplin. were among daughters
who were given a very warm welcome by one of the
oldest present. Mrs. Ada Leach. A timely response was
made by Dt. Rosalee Sharpe, Illustrous Commandress.
Dt. Doris Holland gave a reading entitled "Growing
Old. This was well received by all.
Mrs.- Lyda Wray brought remarks as to how
thoughtful it' was of the daughters to remember the
elderly .and the past Illustrious Commandress, Dt.
Minerva T. Fields for having sphere headed this idea
during her administration to honor the Senior Citizens
of the communityMrs. Ada Leach recited a poem,
"Tomorrow".
Five women and three men were recognized as our
oldest citizens present. Corsages were pinned on the
four women and a $5.00 bill was pinned on the 5th one.

the Oldest pf all is 107) was in the County General
. Hospital .The floral piece that graced the table was
; taken, to hf by Df. Louise T. Moore Boutonnieres were
pinned on the three oldest men and they were kissed by
our Illustrious Commandress, Dt. Rosalee Sharpe. The
men were Thurman Allen 75; Mr. Henry Tucker
Saunders. 75 and Mr. Claude Baker 74. They were
honored and spoke of how happy they were to be pre
sent and what the programs meant to them.
Highlights: Those holding a lucky number were given
a $1 bill and this was a joy to the daughters to see their
faces, light up when their lucky number was called by
our past Illustrious , Commandress, ' Dt. Minerva T.
Fields, ; i- "V .o, .
As .we were about to come to close our Illustrious
Commandress recognized the Potentate of Zafa Temple
No. 176, Noble Gooch and asked him to have a few
remarks. Others among our guest were Noble Daniel
Stewart, Noble Robert Thomas and Nobel Odell Fields.
Benediction was given by Dt. Mary E. Young as the
choir sang God Be With'You Uritil We Meet Again.
Refreshments .were served by our Hospitality Committee.

MISS BAY AW ARnF.n SCHOLARSHIP
Miss Cathy S. Ray, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Deser
Dee Ray of Butner, N.C. has been awarded the John
Austin Tate .Lindsey Tate Cuthbertson Scholarship at
the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The
"scholarship, in the amount of $900 is awarded to
outstanding black students at UNCC. It is based upon
scholarship, need, and potential service to mankind;
Miss Ray is a freshman majoring in psychology and
history. While at UNCC, Miss Ray has been active in
the. Black Student Union, served as assistant to the stu
dent body president, served as student facilitator for
WEETAP and on the school newspaper staff. She has
also been selected as an orientation counselor and news
edtor for the 1979-1980 academic year.
Sabrina McNeil, center, was crowned Miss Taugadet-
ta 1979, at. the annual Taugadetta sponsored by Tau
Gamma Delta 'Sorority. The cornation ceremony was
held on Friday, April 27, at Shepard Jr. High School.

On Saturday, May 26, a Voter Registration Drive will
be conducted at the Cornwallis Housing Project. All
residents over the age of eighteen can register to vote
from 10:00 a.m. Jlo 1;0Q p.m.: in the Weaver Street
Recreation Center. The Durham Committee on Black
- Affairs is sponsoring the Voter Registration Drive. The
Probates of Delta Sigma Theta, Durham Alumnae
Chapter, rendered assistance in the drive by canvassing
the hpmes of residents on Saturday May 19 to distribute
voting information , '
MRS. BRADLEY HONORED
DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY
New Delta Miss Kathy Lynn Williams, the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Don G. Williams, Sr. 1913 South Rox
boro St. was recently inducted to membership in Delta
Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She is presently a
junior at Johnson C. Smith Univeristy, Charlotte,
North Carolina majoring in computer science.
NCC AREA GARDEN CLUB
The NCC Area Garden Club held its monthly meeting
at 1914 Cecil St. Hostess Mrs. Otelia Becton. Mrs.
Sophine Chavis opened the garden gate with the club
song after the devotion. Mrs. Becton read a poem. The
club president, Mrs. Nettie Easterling presided as
reports and minutes were read, unfinished business was ,
taken care of and new business, concerning the club
project, was discussed. Plans were made for the conven
tion to be held in Durham August 5, 6, 7 of this year.
Mrs. Nettie Easterling was presented with a plaque
for her outstanding work in the NCC Area Garden Club
and Mrs. Chavis presented a Mother's Day card tQ the

Jessie Page, Wenica Peak,, Lizzie Sprulle, Maggie Hen
ton, and Mi. Cathy Meeks (who is not a mother but en-. ,
joyed the card also). Mrs. Otelia Becton served a .
delicious recast. Mrs. Peaks thanked the hostess. Next

- College View Duplicate Bridge Club is sponsoring an
American Bridge Association Eastern Sectional Tourna
ment Friday, May 25, through Monday, May 28, at
Hilton Inn," 19707 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, N.C.
We- are expecting players from New York; Pehn
Klvania, Maryalnd, Washington, D.C, Virginia, North
, irolina, and from other areas. Trophies will be award
ed all winners; Playing fees are $4.

Sunday May 13, Mrs. Marie M. Bradley was honored
as "Mother of the Year" by her daughters, Miss Dorcas
M. Bradley of Fayetteville, Mrs, Sandra B. Cathcart of
Charlotte, Mrs, Brenda B. Thompson and Mrs. Con
stance B. Mason both of Durham.
The program took place at Mount Gilead Baptist
Church. Also honorably mentioned were Mrs. Ora L.
Bryant and Mrs. Willie Dunlap. v
A family buffet was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Atlas Dunlap.,
Guests from out of town were Mr. Linnard McCoy,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Punlap, of Norfolk Va. and Mr.
and Mrs. Fred Young of Fayetteville.
THRIFTY SAVING CLUB MEETS
, The Thrifty Saving Club met at Mrs. Christine Sales'
home on Ward Road in honor of Mrs. Marie Harris'
birthday anniversary.4 Following the devotion, f Mrs.
Aline Davis presided over the business session.
Secret pals were commended for each of the gifts

A summer trip to Atlanta to attend a baseball game is
