Sinai Road were entertained on Saturday morning, May 26, by the Probates of Delta Sigma Theta, Durham Alumnae Chapter. Refreshments were served, songs were sung, poetry and scripture were read, and a good time was had by all. ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED The engagement of Miss Jessica Elizabeth Shaw and Philippe Elliot Q. Ayivor is announced by her mother, Mrs. Thomasenia B. Shaw. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Ayivor of Accra, Ghana. A June 30 wedding is planned with St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church the setting for the 1 1:30 a.m. rites. The bride-elect is a 1979 graduate of Duke University. Her finance, also a Duke graduate, is currently studying accoun ting at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg. CORRECTION The first runner-up for the "Miss Taugadetta Crown" was Ms. Nel-Latricia Carter. Her name was inadvertently omitted from the cutline that appeared under the picture in last week's paper. Foster, Mrs. Fisher, Richard W. -LAMPLIGHTERS CLUB CELEBRATE 20th ANNIVERSARY The Lamplighters Club of the Hayestown Community celebrated their 20th Anniversary at Orange Grove Baptist Church on East End Avenue at 6 p.m. The guest speaker was Mrs. Carolyn Thornton, a member of City Council. Her topic was (Looking at the Times In Which We Live.) Her message was enjoyed by all. Two guest choirs, The Pilgrim Wonders of Orange Grove and Zion Temple Christian Church, were also in attendance, The Club honored our first president and our present president. All members were present. The pro gram was most successful. La-PETITE GARDENERS MEET For the May meeting La-Petite Gardeners spent a pleasant evening at the home of the E.J. Kearneys on Alton St. After a formal opening and short business session, Mrs. E.M. Curry with her unique welcoming ceremony, inducted Mrs. Genevive McCrae into the Garden Club. Mrs. McCrae a true gardener, and talented person will be an asset to La Petite and the garden clubs of Durham. Mrs. M. Goode made pictures of the group admiring the plaque presented to Mrs. M.L. Egerton at the Annual Spring Flower Show. "In ap preciation for dedicated service", through the years. Games were played, while Mrs. Kearney served a delicious dinner. Harrison of 194 Eldridge Street, Fayet teville, N.C. at the Fort Bragg Officers' Club by his wife and his stepmother Mrs. Carrie Harrison Mitchell. The table as decorated with a beautiful centerpiece yellow and white flowers and a lovely birthday cake. Mr. Harrison was stunned and overjoyed to see so many of his relatives and friends there. Mr. James Brown and Mr. Leo Davis served as hosts. Games and activities were conducted by Mrs. Pecolia Groves and Mrs. Birdell Smith. Rev. Page blessed a most delicious dinner that was served and all had a superb time. Those en joying the gala event were: Rev. and Mrs. R.E. Page and daughters C. Mr. Harrison received many, many lovely gifts. He thanked all with a heart-warming speech. MRS. LOLA CLARK HONORED ON HER 76TH BIRTHDAY Mrs. Virginia Rogers honored her mother, Mrs. Lola Clark on her 76th birthday at a dinner on May 26th at Henderson Towers, Duke Street Center. She also honored several of her "adopted mothers" namely Mesdames, E.H.Fogle, Luetta Sims, Lyda VanHook, Elizabeth Brown, Mary Saunders, Estelle Geter and Bessie James. Other guests were: Mesdames: Ruth McCollum, Margaret Hawley, Sandra Brunson and Rosalyn Cole. Mrs. Cole was presented a gift for receiving her Masters Degree in Business Education. Gifts were also given her receiving her Masters Degree in Business Education. Gifts were also given to the other guests. And gifts were received by the honorees, Mrs. Clark and Mrs. Rogers who celebrated her birthday on May 28th. Mrs. Rogers was assisted by her daughters, Misses Karen and Wanda Sanford. Miss Wanda Sanford, also received gifts for her upcoming graduation on June 8th. COSMETOLOGIST CLUB NO. I Cosmetologist Club No I met at the home of Mrs. Cora McCloud, 1309 N. Alston Ave. The meeting opened with devotion. Afterward, the business session opened with reports given by each committee. Mrs. Lois Burrough, presi dent, gave her delegates report from the N.C. State Beauti cians Convention held in Charlotte N.C. on April 22-24. The report was approved and accepted. Two new members joined the association; Mrs. Brenda Street and Mrs. Pam Amos, both employed at La Marick Styling Salon, North Duke Mall. The project committe gave their report on the fall seminar afterwhich, Mrs. Marie Harris, the hostess, served a delicious recast which was enjoyed by all. Members present were: Mesdames Cora McCloud, Gladys Best, Lillie Carver, Marie Harris, Lula Hill, Willie Mae Brockman, Lois Burrough, Pam Amos, Brenda Street, Shirely Lennon. THE E.W. WALKER BIBLE CLASS The E.W. Walker, Bible Class of First Calvery Baptist Church, held its monthly meeting with Mrs. Rebecca Haskins 1013 Fairview Street, Mrs. Margaret Milligan presiding. After the minutes were read and approved, the hostess, Mrs. Haskins and her daughter, Edna served a delicious repast to the following members: Mesdames Dora Watson, Sadie Chambers, Celestine Cunningham, Ellen Brown, Lovella King, Hallie Crews, Bessie Smith, Margaret Milligan, Arlene Mebane, Nellie Hayes, Rosa Grafton, Semega Solomon, Josephine Foushee, Mary L. Stephen, Nancy Cameron, Fan nie Stroud, Mrs. Cameron thanked the hostess for a most delightful evening. The next meeting will be held with Mrs. Josephine Foushee, Cornell Street. GARDEN CLUB HOLDS MONTHLY MEETING Mrs. Mary F. Horton hosted the West Durham Blossom Garden Club at her home, 3225 Fayetteville Street, Tuesday night, May 22 at 8 p.m. The garden gate was opened by Miss Ruth Stephens after which the president presided over the business session which included committee reports and a thank you to members who participated in the recent flower show, helped with the clean up drive and attended worship service on Sunday, May 20. Mrs. Daisy Gunn was presented gifts for being selected "Mother of The Year", Mrs. Gertrude Gibson gave a demonstration in arrangements with roses grown in her own garden and Mr. J.H. Packenham, supervisor of science in the Durham City Schools, gave us valuable information on hydroponics. A new member, Mrs. Grace Gore was welcom ed to the club. Guests who enjoyed a delicious dinner were: Mesdames Sophronia Greene, Bessie Wagstaff, Hazel Rich, Harriet Miller, Mamie Vinson. Fisher Celebrates 70th Birthday Florida Lucylle, Miles Mark, IV, Alfred Foster, Elijal John, III, Christopher Tennant, Ada Markka and thei families had the pleasure of entertaining over one hundre family members, "old Fayetteville St.": neighbors, and clos personal friends of their mother-Mrs. Ada Virginia Foste Fisher with a buffet dinner from two until five in the after noon at the Saddle and Fox Restaurant, 3211 Hillsborougl Road on Sunday, May 27. The occasion was to honor Mrs Fisher's 70th birthday which is May 30. The festivities were preceded by the signing of a gues; book, a display of scrapbooks and other memorabilia, anc the mingling of old neighbors, family and friends. For many, this was the first time that the "old Fayetteville St.'' neighbors had been together in more than twenty years. A program was designed and presided over by the moderator, Ada M. Fisher. Since Mrs. Fisher was a fixture on Fayet teville St. and a legend in the hearts and minds of Durham, it was difficult to invite all and the gathering had to be limited to family and neighbors who were like anextended family with each other, having lived there while all of the Fisher were there. A prayer was offered by Rev. Miles M. Fisher, IV, ' followed by the tfferigof--the traditional fisher Family blessing--'Wow bless this bread we're about to break, make our unions kind and great, for Christ's, sake, A-men. " A feastive buffet meal was served. The introduction of guests who were able to attend follow ed. Mrs. Florida L. Parker introduced- her mother's schoolmates-Mrs. Abner Clay of Rjichmoid, Mrs. Beitye Pratt and Mrs. Bernadine S. Bailey as well as her close friends, Mrs. Candise pemberton, Mrs. Martha Joies and Mrs. Laura Bruce. Miles M. Fisher, IV, introduced the families who have had contact with all of the Fishers-the D. Eric Moores, the W. J. Kennedy families represented by Mrs. Margaret K. Goodwin, the James E. Shepards, the Will Bruces represented by Mrs. Laura Bruce, the Spauldings represented by the music teacher for all of the Fisher children Mrs. Margaret S. Shearih, the first principal of the Fisher children-Nathaniel A. Cheek, the first grade teacher for all of the Fisher children-Mrs. M. Ora Sneed Lec. the Sunday mother-Mrs. Annie C. Laster, the family's doctor-David B. Cooke, Sr., MD, the Cooke and Logan families, the J. H. Bells represented by Dr. Betty B. Young and Karl Bell, the Caulbert Joneses represented by Mrs. Martha Jones, the Williams Family Circle represented by the Ellis L. Aliens, the W. W. Perry-Harris families with Mrs. Eula P. Harris and Gordon R. Perry, the Stanford L. Warren Library with Mrs. Margaret Whisenton present, and Lincoln Hospital by Mrs. M. K. Goodwin. Alfred F. Fisher introduced neighbors'-the Page families (the J. W. Pages, the B. F. Pages, and the J. P. Thorpes), the J. C. Wilson, who were also celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary, the Jarius Wilsons, the John W. Smiths, the Williamses by Mrs. Plassie W. Harris, Mrs. Mar tha Easterting, Ms. Rupert Blanchard, the lngrams, the G. B. Smiths (decendants of the Pearson families), Mrs. Mary E. Grant, the Clark Egertons, Mrs. B. S. Bailey, Leondras Williams, the E. L. Kearneys, and Nathaniel B. White. Weaver's Cleaners, Dillard's Store, Kearney's Shoe Repair and Laundromat, beauticians-Ms. Roxanna I. Easterling and Mrs. Estelle Freland Belcher, Charleston's Fish Market, P & W Grill, J. L. Page and Sons, the College Inn, Williams Grocery, Union Electric, Leading Sandwich Shop, Thorpe's Store were the businesses on Fayetteville St. presented by E. J. "Pookey" Fisher and representatives of these establishments were acknowledged. Christopher T. Fisher introduced the Foster-Jackson family members present-the Wendell 7A Fssters, the Richard W. Fosters, Wilbert F. Foster, the Kermit M. Fosters, the Francis M. Fosters, the Kenneth X. Warrens, the Alan J. Fosters, Ms. Grace Epps, Mrs. Delia Ci Jackson, the James M. Washingtons, the William T. Harrises, Mrs. Matthew E. Perkins, the Hugh Winfres, and the Caskie sisters-Effie McKinght and Erma Morris of Richmond, Virginia and the Hey ward Blackwells of Washington, D. C. iThe guests and Fisher family relayed some of their favorite stories and renew ed old friendships. A threes-layer pink trimmed birthday cake was then presented Mrs. Fisher as all present sang "Happy Birthday. " Ada M. Fisher proposed a toast to life to her mother from her family in hope of sharing many more bir thdays. Mrs. Fisher responded by thanking all of those pre sent for coming and expressed her love" to all. The formal program concluded as Dr. Ada Fisher khared some personal remembrances of her family and hefsfrong belief in a God. The audience then joined Dr. Fisher hnd Mrs. M. K. Good win in the singing of "God Will, Take? Care of You" followed by the Mitzvah. , Mrs. Ada V. F. Fisher is the daughter of the late Christopher F. Foster and Lucy Jackson Foster of Richmond, Virginia. Mrs. Fisher is a. 1929 cum laude graduate of Virginia Union University where she excelled in Latin and French. ' She was recently presented a citation by her alma mater "in honor of her service to the university and noting her historical work on behalf of Virginia." The occasion was the fiftieth reunion for her clasi. She was married to the late Dr. Miles M. Fisher in 193 L and had six children all of whom have attained advanced degrees in their respective fields. For years, Mrs. Fisher was a part of Fayetteville St. and is unique as an oral historian of Durham and Richmond, Va. As a special remembrance of the occasion, Mi?. .Fisher was presented a white orchid which was pinned on her by her grandson, James E.
