Department of Chemistry and Physics.. The grant, funded through the National Science Foundation's Comprehensive Assistance to Undergradaute Science Education (CAUSE) pro gram, will be administered to the consortium by Dr. J. William Byrd, chair man of the Department of Physics and Dr. Angelo A. Volpe, chairman of. the Department of Chemistry at ECU. Dr. James H Townes, chairman of. the Department of Physical Science, will administer the program at E.C.S.U. The primary objectives of this program are; development of a strong undergraduate program in applied physical sciences that will prepare students for jobs in a technolgy based society, develop ment orstrong university- industry ties, and the iden-i tification and encourage-1 ment of minority (black,; women, Indian, etc.) and Caucasian students to pur sue careers in these fields. Interested students nay enroll In an introductory program at any of the i three universities and , complete an advanced 1 program in applied science , in ECU. . Features of the program .will include specialization in applied chemistry and physics and industrial workshops to give ( students an opportunity to interact firsthand with in dustrial scientists in an in dustrial environment. Because of industry's increasingly greater dependence on computers and related equipment, Drs. Byrd and Volpe said they are convince that a thorough grounding in the use ' of computers and familiarization with com putins .systems and neworks is , "an essential feature" in the education of applied scientists for industry. Byrd andi Volpe said that establishing a com puter network will make possible a variety; pf educational! experiences for students such as anaylsis - of experimental data, interfacing of ex perimental equipment, ' data storage on remote firocessors, and access to arge computers.
