T. i GARDEN CLUB HAS HOLIDAY BREAKFAST 7 On Thursday, December V the West Durham Blossom Garden Club helds it annual Christmas breakfast at the Downtowner Motor Inn on Chapel Hill Street. Christmas decorations adorned each table and Mrs. Mary Horton greeted and registered guests as they arriv ed. During the morning, Mrs. Naomi Parker presented a short program which included carols, a solo by Mrs. Margaret Bridges, a reading by Mrs. Alease Bynum and a short address "This Is Your Day" by Miss Catherine Martin, her co-worker and a student at UNC Chapel . Hill. After the program, we played games in which prizes were given. A delectable breakfast buffet was enjoyed by the following: Mr. and Mrs. Lee Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Love, Mr. and Mrs. Barnie Bridges, Mmes. Ella Brown, Rosa Artis, Sallie Cooper, Barbara Faulk, Clara Bowl ing, Clark Perkins, Virginia Jackson, Margaret Hedgepeth, Oveta . Mcintosh, Josie Powell, Rose Whitlow, Anne Gunn, Ruth Fulton, Minor Ward, Hazel Rich, Harriet Miller, Gwendolyn Bynum, a guest Alease Bynum, Misses Cleo Russell, Catherine Martin, Hattie White, Henry L. Gunn, Benjamin McClary, James Rogers, Arthur Love and John Plummer. Members present included Mmes. Margaret Allen, Mary Allison, Anna Duke, Alease Bynum, Beulah Ed wards, Naomi Gibson, Mary McClary, Georgia Taylor, Daisy Gunn, Grace Gore, Cornetta Williams, Mary Horton, Mary Louise and Ruth Stephens. Mrs. Daisy Gunn acting as Santa Claus presented visitors and club members with gifts revealing secret pals. Each person expressed thanks to the committee, chaired by Mrs. McClary, for arranging such a happy affair. ' 1 NCC AREA GARDEN CLUB MEETS The NCC Area Garden Club met at 606 Martha Street with Mrs. Nettie Easterling serving as hostess. The garden gates were opened with the singing of Silent Night, a scripture reading and a prayer by Mrs. Hattie Johnson. The meeting was presided over by club president, Mrs. Nettie Easterling. The minutes were read and business was discussed. After the business session, San ta's helpers began wrapping gifts and preparing fruit baskets which were taken to the House of Leisure by Mrs. Chavis, Vr Peaks, Mrs. Johnson and Mike Davis. Christmas caiois were sung and enjoyed by all. Our club p ident was surprised with a birthday par ty as she w ninety years young. We exchanged gifts and proud'v. announced that Miss Cathy Meeks was crowned Miss Hornet of Hillside High School. Cathy is a very special young lady and we wish her luck and good fortune. Mrs. Hattie Johnson spent the holidays in New York and Mrs. Chavis' daughters, Sheryl and Mechella were home for the holidays. Mrs. Lucille Markham is still in Duke Hospital and we pray for a speedy recovery. Our closing remarks were God loves you, God cares for you and God knows you. The meeting was adjourn ed. The next meeting will be held at Mrs. Meeks home on Nebo Street. SENIOR CHOIR SPONSORS DINNER Members of the senior choir of First Calvary Baptist Church ate Christmas dinner with their friends at the Chicken Hut on Fayetteville Street Thursday, December 27. The president, Ms. Bernice G. White opened the meeting by appointing members to sing Christmas Carols and a short devotional period with scripture by Mrs. Vergie A. Proctor and prayer by Mrs. Leola H. Crutchfield. Mrs. Magnora A. Farrar read minutes of the last meeting which were approved. The constitution was reviewed and amendments were added to help the needy, sick, students and newlyweds. A total of $105 was raised. College graduates were Stanley Mc Clamb, Shaw University and Ms. Ponice Larosa Brown, A&T State University. Both received five dollars. Twenty-eight of the 1 If members enrolled were present. Before the president closed the meeting, a "This Is Your Life" program honoring Mrs. Alma Atwater Lassiter the first president who served for more than twenty years, was held. She is a native of Chatham County and a Hillside High School graduate, a member of New Hope Baptist Church and has served as a member of many auxiliaries and president of many. She is married to Jessie Lassiter and they celebrated their Golden Anniversary this month. They have one son, Charles and a daughter, Cloyce. Mrs. Lassiter was employed at Duke University Medical Center for over eighteen years and also at Belk's store for several years before retiring. Dues collected were $14.40. Officers are Mmes. Ber nice O. White, president; Luzzani F. Thompson, vice president; Alice H. Harrington, secretary; Magnora A. Farrar, Assistant Secretary; Stella A. Alston, treasurer and Ruby A. Devine, accounting clerk-historian. The members were served a delicious repast by Mr. and Mrs. Lassiter. Mrs. Louise McClamb thanked the hostess and host for a very enjoyable evening. A CHRISTMAS PARTY The annual Christmas party of the Year Round Garden Club was held on December. 17 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. N.H. Bennett, Jr. on Masondale Avenue, the home had the appearance of a "Christmas Holiday House". All of the decorations were made by the hostess. Also on display were the blue ribbon winners in the La Petite Garden Club's Christmas Decoration Clinic. The program for the evening included singing Christmas carols, reading Christmas poems and a special rendition of "Jingle Bells" by Mrs. 'Cindy Rankin and her daughters, Sherrie and Tiffany. Christmas presents were exchanged. After the program, a traditional Christmas dinner was served. Members enjoying this festive occasion were Mmes. Wilma Milum, Cora Jackson, Edna Mason, Ethel Perry, Emma Randolph, Cindy Rankin, Mary Thomas and Lucinda Harris. Guests attending were Mrs. Pauline Pompey and Sherrie and Tiffany Rankin. YAHAMA SOCIAL CLUB DECEMBER ACTIVITIES The month of December has been a very busy one for members of the Yahama Social Club. On Saturday, December 15, a benefit raffle to raise money for the Club's annual scholarship fund was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Baines; Sunday, December 23, several members of the club went Christmas caroling and carried fruit baskets to several sick-and-shut-in per sons throughout the community; Friday, Deember 28, the Club's annual Christmas party was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Clemons. During this occa sion, secret pals were revealed and gifts were exchanged. The next meeting of the cUb wUl be in January with Mrs. Clementine Self as hostess. , 4, 1 Wilbur Anthony Parker On December 14, the United States Army ROTC Detachment at North Carolina A&T State University commissioned eleven students as Second Lieutenants in the United States Army. Among those was Wilbur An thony Parker, son qf Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur V. Parker of Bahama. He will be stationed in F&rt Bliss, Texas. Congratulations and best wishes to newlyweds, Mr. and Mrs. Marion Ray McKennie. Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Marks of Miami Florida spent a week including the Christmas holiday with their son and daughter-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Dahlgren Marks of Durham. Miss Doris Eubanks of New Jersey spent Christmas with her mother, Mrs. Mary Eubanks of Durham. Miss Lawanda Lawson spent the Christmas holidays with her father, F.S. Lawson of Durham. Mrs. V.A. Kenion has returned home after spending the week including Christmas holidays with her daughter, Mrs. Louise K. Perry of Seat Pleasant, Maryland. Miss Tammy Parker of Maryland has returned home after spending the Christmas holiday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel D. Parker of Durham.
