Monday. Ask any numerologist ten is the number signifying full ness, excellence and perfec tion. The music laid down by the band from Spartanburg, S C., on their second LP for Warner Bros. Record, is all this and more. It marks a further expansion of the alluring jazz directions heard on their smash Warners debut Running Like The Wind, as well as an exhilarat ing consolidation of their rock and rhythm roots. Tenth comes at an au spicious juncture in this eminent American band's career, a fresh sound at the start of a new decade. Over all the years of the group's collective existence, through each of their al bums, one of the secrets of The Marshall Tucker Band's success has been the dif ficulty of defining their mu sic. There is, quite literally, something for everybody in The Marshall Tucker sound. Even the members of the band have divergent opin ions on the subject Bassist Tommy Caldwell says the music is 'country-jazz.' His brother and lead guitarist Toy Cladwell thinks of the group as 'a real progressive country band.' Rhythm guitarist George McCorkle prefers the designation 'an American rock 'n' roll band' which plays 'traditional American music' He prefers producer Stewart Levine's description as a 'country jazz band.' The important thing is that all these diver gent influences meld into the uniquely infectious Marshall Tucker brew. "I don't think there'll ever be six cats that get along this well," ventures Tommy Caldwell on the subject of the band's ten yeaf associa tion. "To me, this is the tightest band that ever was or ever will be on stage." "We've always had fun playing together," adds Doug Gray. "We're a 20 member family, counting the road crew. If your goal is to be the best damn rock 'n' roll band in the country, then you stay together." Tenth, produced by Stewart Levine, features ten new Marshall Tucker origin als including: 'It Takes Time,' 'Disillusion,' 'Gospel Singin' Man,' 'Without You' and 'Foolish Dreaming.' A stun ning entry into a new decade, Tenth establishes the Marshall Tucker Band's dominance in contemporary music Tor another glorious decade. TV C0MFU10Q KRVKM, INC.
