Watley, president, Paul Quinn College, Waco, Texas, wiD the guest preacher for Holy Week Services St. Joseph's African Methodist Episcopal Church, 2S21 Fayetteville St., beginning March 31 through April 3. The services will begin at 7:30 pjn. nightly in the Church Sanctuary. Dr. Watley is a native of St. Louis, Missouri and was edu cated in the St. Louis public schools. He received an A-B. degree from St. Louis University, the MDiv. degree from the Interdenominational Theological Center of Atlanta, Ga. the MPhil. degree from Columbia University of New York City, and is currently a PhD. candidate at Columbia and Union Theological Seminary, a joint program in New York City in the Field of Social Ethics. He received the Honorary LID degree from Edward Waters College in 1977. Dr. Watley served as pastor of Union AJsl.E. Church of Warwick, N. Y. from 1972-74. He served as pastor of Mace donia A.M.E. Church of Flushing, N. Y. from 1974-78 and is currently serving as President of Paul Quinn College of Waco, Texas. He is a recipient of the Rockefeller Doctoral Fellowship and also serves as a member of the Final Selection Commit tee for Awards for North American Blacks in Religion (The Fund for Theological Education), a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, the Rotary Club, Lions Club Interna tional, and the Governing Board of the National Council of Churches. In 1974, Dr. Watley appeared in the Awards Volume of Outstanding Young Men in America. retired in 1979, she was cer tified as a supervisor by the American Schools Food Ser vice Association. She taught several courses in food ser vices at Durham Technical Institute. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Prospect Chapter 379; Golden Circle Assembly 218; Daughters of. Isis, Zafa Court 41; and the Nacirema Club. She was also a member of the Durham and Orange County Food Ser vice Asso1 alion. the American Scnool Food Ser vice Association and the North Carolina School Food Service Supervisors Associa tion. She was a member of West Durham Baptist Church. Surviving are her hus band, Ellis Starnes; her mother, Mrs. Vallie S. Oliver; two sisters, Mrs. Inez Kearney of Bay Shore, Long Island, N. William Richardson, pastor, Mount Bright Baptist Church, Hillsborough, will be the speaker. The installation services began Monday, March 24. There will be a banquet Saturday evening, March 29. Cobb. Burial was in Glen nview Memorial Park. She was a native of Durham and attended the Durham city schools. She was a retired supervisor of food service for the city school system. Alexander, 58, former Director of the News Bureau at North Carolina Central University and the founder of the university's Academic Skills Center, died Wednesday, March 19, in Normal, Illinois. He was, at the time of his death, Director of the High Potential Students Program at Illinois State University and an associate professor of English at that university. Alexander served as Direc tor of the News Bureau at NCCU from I963 to I967. When Dr. Albert N. Whiting became president of what was then North Carolina Col lege, Alexander was ap pointed by Dr. Whiting to design and institute a tutorial program for students who showed potential for academe owPi;k,nbH)iai$,o diSRjayerj specie .deficien cies in test scores or high school work. Alexander established a program which began almost immediately to receive na tional attention. By December of I970, he was able to report that more than fifty seniors were scheduled to graduate the next June, seniors whose college careers would have been ended without the Academic Skills Center. Alexander left NCCU in I97I to establish a similar pro gram for disadvantaged students at Illinois State University, the High Potential Student Program he directed until his death. Alexander had taught at Texas ' Southern University, Jackson State College. Tougaloo College, and Fort Valley State College before joining the NCCU faculty and staff, He was a native of Macon, Georgia. He held the bachelor of science degree from Fort Valley State College and the master of arts degree from the State University of Iowa. He was a veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Doris W. Alexander, of the home, I824 Fort Jesse Road, Normal Illinois. Memorial services were held Thursday evening in Normal.
