12 THE CAROLINA TIMES ECSU Plans New Degree Program ELIZABETH CITY Earlier granted "Authorization to Plan," Elizabeth City State University is now in the process of planning lo establish four new degree granting programs in the arts and sciences. With ap proval from the General Administration of The University of North Carolina system, ECSU plans to expand its career oriented curriculum with programs in Accounting, Computer Science, Ap plied Maihematics, and Music (non-teaching). Three of the new pro grams are targeted for im plementation by August, 1981. "Ve are very ap preciative 'of these new developments and "of the support that we have received from the UNC General Administration as we seek to become 'The' University of Nor theastern North Carolina," Dr. Jimmy R. Jenkins, vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, said in making the an nouncement. Dr. Jenkins indicated thai the request to change the title of Police Science Technology to Criminal Justice was also approved. The proposed new pro grams, when . im plemented, will impact significantly on ECSU's minority (white) enroll ment. The Accounting pro gram fulfills a statewide need for accountants in that the demand is" ex pected to exceed supply in to the 1980's, projected Dr. Johnv H. Carson, chairman, Department of Business and Ecor- 1 he new programL formerly an Accounting Concentration, is designed to increase the levels of ex cellence and proficiency as students train for posi tions in the accounting profession, for successful admission to professional schools, or for successful completion of the, Uniform Certified Public Accountants Examina tion. Observing that only two universities provide pro grams in mathematical and theoretical statistics, Dr. Sohindar Sachdev, chairman, Department of Mathematical Sciences, noted that the new pro gram in Applied Mathematics, when im plemented, will be the first in the state. Careful con sultation with the Mathematical Association of America and other similar associations, and formulation of the pro posed curriculum extends the planning process at least through September, 1981. In documenting the need for the new program in Applied Mathematics, and during the process of writing this proposal Dr. Sachdev also discovered a , high level of interest , among ECSU students in a new program in Com puter Science. Designed to be similar " to the Com puter and Information Science program at five other state universities, the ECSU program will stress "application of computers and computing to physical, biological, : social, managerial and ' behavioral sciences." The proposed new non teaching program in Music leads to the BA , . degree. Assessing that "music is the eight largest 1 industry in the country," , Dr. Edna L. Davis, chair-1 man. Department of 1 Music, revealed that the program will include a j track in music merchan i dising and a track in music and related arts. These are designed primarily to prepare persons for various positions in music businesses and community arts management. The , department hopes to be able to accept enrollees in August, 1981.
