He visited New Bern, Bath and Edenton, stopping at planta tions along the way. In December, 1980, 216 years later, you can retrace his steps in a three-day special tour of the Finest 200-year-old buildings in eastern Noith Carolina, and join in festivities opening the holiday season, including the opening of the Tryon Palace Christmas season. Jointly sponsored by the Tryon Palace Commission, the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, the N.C. Department of Commerce and Seashore Trailways, the Dec. 5-7 tour will include special tours and events in town and countryside from Wilmington and Edenton. Beginning in New Bern on Friday, December 5, par ticipants will visit Brunswick Town's St. Phillips Church and cemetery where Royal Gov. Arthur Dobbs is buried. They will see Orton Plantation and Wilmington's Burgwin Wright House. Traditions say that Cornwallis stayed here during the British occupation of Wilmington during the Revolution. The tour leads to Swansboro's Jonathan Green and Peter Ringware houses, and the final stop for Friday will be near Pollocksville at a plantation built for Simon Foscue and owned by his decendants since its beginning. Continuing Saturday, December 6, the 1980 Gover nor Tryon Winter Tour par ticipants will tour the Tryon Palace complex, which in cludes North Carolina's first permanent capitol and historic buildings such as the Steven son and John Wright Stanly exhibition homes. Outside New Bern the tour will visit Bellair Plantation, begun in 1757 as a country home for Richard Spaight, whose son, Quick Copying And FULL SERVICE FOR ALL YOUR PRINTING NEEDS Service Printing 504 E. Bellair is the sole su-vivor of eightenth cen tury structures in Craven County and is especially im portant because it pre-dates Tryon Palace. The afternoon schedule in cludes a guided tour of N"'v Bern's historic district. A special treat for evening is the candlelight tour opening the Tryon Palace Christmas season. For Sunday December 7, the schedule will cover Edenton's historic district including the 1767 courthouse described as the finest Georgian Cour thouse in the south. Also in the district is historic St. Paul's Episcopal Church, se cond oldest church building in North Carolina and the 1725 Cupola House, often con sidered the best example of an existing wooden house in the Jacobean tradition in all America. Tour participants will have lunch at the Penelope Barker House. Afternoon will find tour participants crossing Albemarle Sound to Somerset Place State Historic Site and Historic Bath, incorporated in 1705 and home of many pro minent planters, colonial governors, statesmen, plain Quakers and the notorious pirate, Blackbeard. Com pleting the Sunday agenda is a candlelight dinner at the historic Palmer-Marsh house. Qualified guides will accom pany participants as they retrace the steps of Governor Tryon.
