CHRISTMAS DECORATION SHOW - La Petite
Garden Club will sponsor its annual Christmas
Decoration Show on Sunday, December 7, 3:30
p.m., at J.J. Henderson Towers on Duke Street.
Doors will open at 1 p.m: for arrangements to be
placed; at 2 for judges; and at 3:30 for the public.

WHO ARE THE MEN WHO BATTER THEIR
WIVES AND GIRLFRIENDS AND HOW CAN
THEY BE HELPED? This is the subject of a
workshop to be held Monday, December 8, 7:30
p.m., at the Durham YWCA, 809 Proctor St.,
Durham. Topics to be discussed will include infor
mation on the profile and problems of violent men,
and treatment strategies for counseling these men.
All community members are welcome. The
workshop is sponsored by the YWCA Coalition for

LEARN TO DANCE FOR THE HOLIDAYS -Three-lesson
workshop for beginners. Become a
pro at the cha cha, swing, rumba, waltz, leading
and following techniques and variation steps, all to
music from the Big Band era, the 70's and the 80's.

ADULT BOOK DISCUSSION The North
Durham Branch Library (Riverview Shopping
Center) of the Durham County Library is sponsor
ing an Adult Book Discussion group on the second
and fourth Tuesday of each month from 10-11:30
a.m. to discuss popular fiction and non-fiction
titles. Regular attendance is not required and new
faces are always welcome.

AFTERSCHOOL RECREATION PROGRAMS
The Durham City Community Education pro
gram and the Durham Parks and Recreation
Department are conducting Aftejschool Recreation
Programs at Y.E. Smith, East End and George
Watts Elementary schools. These programs operate
each day school is open through June 5, 1981. The
hours are Monday through Friday, 2:30-5:30 p.m.
The program offers a wide range of activities in
cluding sports and athletics, music and drama, arts
and crafts, study hours, tutorial sessions, and other
seasonal special events. There is a small weekly fee.

SOUTHERN CONFERENCE ON AFRO
AMERICAN STUDIES will hold its Second An

DURHAM SYMPHONY YOUNG ARTISTS
COMPETITION for pianists and orchestral in
strumentalists, grades 10-12 in Durham, Wake,
Orange, Granville and Person counties. Winners
will play a movement of a standard concerto with

A VOLUNTEER IS NEEDED at a health care
facility to escort patients to designated places and
back to their rooms.
Also, a 12-yeifc-old black youth would love to
have a big brother to do things with. His mother is a
single parent who works full time. His younger
sister has a big sister and he feels left out.

CHILDREN'S FILM FESTIVAL The Carr
boro Recreation and Parks Department continues
its 1980 Children's Film Festival on Friday,
December 5, 7 p.m., with Robert Louis Stevenson's
"Kidnapped". Parents are invited to enjoy the film
with their children. All films are shown in the Carr
boro Elementary School Auditorium. There is a 75C
per person admission fee.
The final film in the series will be December 19 -"The

THE ANNUAL BARGAIN SALE sponsored by
the Durham Junior League will be held Friday and
Saturday, December 5 and 6, at the Civic Center on
Foster Street. There will be a special pre-sale for
senior citizens from 1-3 p.m. on Friday. The general
sale times are from 5-9 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to
3 p.m. on Saturday.
Sale items will include new and used clothing,
household goods, tools, toys and specialty gifts.
Proceeds from the sale will be returned to the
community through projects this year's special
project is Children in Placement.
