ELSON'S FEARLESS BOWL FORECAST
Hi jf bft
Hey, hey, hey the bowl
season is in full swing. If
you truly love football
then it's your favorite
season of the year. For
those of you who love
football about as much as
you do 'the policies of
Ayatollah Khomeini, I say
please bear with us, it will
finally come to an end in ,
Feburary, 1981 when the
NFL's Pro Bowl is played
in Honolulu. I'll only for
cast collegiate games now,
the pros will come later.
December 5-Gold Bowl;
Richmond, Va. North
Carolina Central versus
North Carolina A&T:
These two teams met in
Durham on November 22
and A&T romped to a
49-13 win. It was 37-0
A&T this time.
December
13-Independence Bowl;
Shreveport, La.
McNeese State versus
Southern Mississippi:
Even though McNeese is
10-1 they're not in the
same class as those guys as
Southern, The final tally
was Southern Miss.,
20-16.
December 14-Garden
State Bowh The
. Meadowlands, N.J.
Navy versus Houston:
Who in their right minds
would want to go to a
bowl in northern New
Jersey at this time of the
year? Well, Navy and
Houston did whether
they're sane or not! Navy
is definitely the best ser
vice team in awhile and
Houston has been a major
disappointmenttbut it was
the Cougars, 35-0.
December 19-Holiday
Bowl, San Diego SMU
versus BYU: This could be
one of the most exciting
match ups. What a way to
kick off the holidays.
BYU is tough but SMU
faced a tougher schedule
so I'll go with the
Mustangs by two.
December 20-Tangerine
Bowl; Orlando Fla.
Maryland versus Florida:
The Gators are the most
improved team in the na
tion (up from last years'
0-10-1 season). Maryland
really came on strong
following a mid-season
slump. 1 think the Terps
will win this one by seven.
December 26-Fiesta
Bowl; Tempe, Arizona
Penn St. versus Ohio
State: The so-called major
bowls would love to have
this match up. Both teams
are 9-2 but Ohio State has
been somewhat a dissa
pointment. The teams that
beat them (UCLA,
Michigan) played great
defense and Joe Paterno
has a great defensive club,
that's why I'm picking the
Nittany Lions by four in a
slug fest.
December 27-HaIl of
Fame Bowl; Birmingham,
Ala. Tulane versus
Arkansas: This should be
Elson Armstrong Jr.
dubbed the who cares
bowl, neither team should
be here, but I think
Arkansas even at 6-5 has
too much for 7-4 Tulane.
December 27-Liberty
Bowl; Memphis, Tenn.
Missouri versus Purdue:
Both teams had hoped to
be elsewhere representing
their conferences as
champs but they find
themselves in West Ten
nessee. I believe that the
Big Eight is a tougher
league than the Big Ten so
I'll go with Missouri by
eleven.
December 27-Sun Bowl;
El Paso, Tex.: Nebraska
versus Mississippi State:
The Cornhuskers who
threatened for No. 1 all
year just has too much for
the boys from Dixie. The
Cornhuskers by 24.
December 29-Gator
Bowl; Jacksonville, Fla.
South Carolina versus
Pittsburgh: USC has it's
best team ever with that
man George Rogers in the
back field, Pitt counters
with a rugged defense an
chored by that man Hugh
Greene. Could be one of
the better bowls. Pitt's
"D" is just too strong.
The Panthers will win by
four.
December
31-Bluebonnet Bowl;
Houston,, Tex. Texas
versus North Carolina:
Before "Black Saturday"
in October, both of these
teams were gunning for
the national title. Since
then Texas has swooned.
The Tar Heels bounced
back nicely to finish 10-1.
This one is tough to call
but' I'll stand with the
'Heels and they'll win by
seven.
January 1 -Cotton Bowl;
Dallas, Tex. Baylor
versus Alabama: The
Bears are tough (How'd
they ever lose to San Jose
State?), but Bear Bryant
of Alabama is tougher.
The Crimson Tide will win
by seventeen.
January 1 -Orange
Bowl; Miami, Fla.
Oklahoma versus Florida
State: The rematch bowl,
the sametwo teams were
here last year. Florida
State will be going for
revenge plus an outside
shot at No i J. Oklahoma
(How'd they ever lose to
Stanford?) hit it's stride in
October and hasn't been
stopped since, another
hard one to call. Should
be a real barn burner. I
think Oklahoma will find
a way to beat FSU by
three.
January 1-Rose Bowl;
Pasadena, Cal.
Michigan versus
Washington: I'm glad to
see that Washington
coaches participating will
want to see just what will
be ahead of them during
the regular season as well
as in the conferecne cham
pionships in March."

emerged as the ti ue cham
pion of the Pac-Ten (or
five) and this should shut
up those UCLA and USC
partisans for this year.
Michigan has a history of
choking in bowls (they've
lost seven straight) and the
Big Ten Champion always
seems to blow it in
Pasadena. But against my
better judgement, I'm go
ing to pick the Wolverines
by six.
January 1 -Sugar Bowl;
New Orleans, La.
Notre Dame versus
Georgia: This looks like
the National Champion
ship Game, Georgia has
fantastic Herschell
Walker. Notre Dame has a
dynamite defense, many
people doubt that Georgia
is truly No. 1. Notre Dame
has a history of knocking
off No. i ranked teams.
I'll go with the Irish by
two.
January 2-Peach Bowl;
Atlanta, Ga. Virginia
Tech versus Miami: The
morning after bowl will
see the Hurricanes blow.
Tech back to the Virginia
Jaills. Miami by 27. I
