Over the centuries, different countries have found different ways to celebrate and enjoy this most joyous occasion, the Birth of Christ: The date, December 25, was established by the Romans during the first century A.D., as the official time for the observance of the Birth of Christ, using the 17th to 24th in preparation. However, many Eastern churches, the Greek Orthodox Church, still follow January 6. The first Christmas celebrations were solemn and ho ly, with no gay carols or decorations. Church leaders made the four-week period before Christmas a sacred season. This was a time to pray and prepare for the coming of the Holy Festival. This period is known as "Advent" meaning "the coming." January 6, is called Epiphany, which honors the visit of the wise men to the Christ child in the manger or Christmas Creche. ., DECEMBER 20, 1980 THE CAROLINA TIMES -9 People feasted and danced d held festival during this season, but St. Francis of Assist fell thai the poor people did not really understand Ihc importance of the Christmas Story. So, he invited a group to go to Greccia in 1223, to a cave where he had set up a manger filled with hay, live oxen and a donkey. St. Francis led the people in singing carols. Many countries have observances that are different from ours. Mrs. Evans included Yugoslavia, Palestine. Syria, Ireland, Rumania, Finland and France.
