1980 Sports Review
X By Larry Barber
f -The first year of this
decade offered the sports
fans a delicious dose of ex
citement, and 'fond
thoughts of anticipation.
JThere were power shifts in
team sports and many hew
faces among individual
ithletics. With athletes
getting bigger and better
as generations pass, more
surprises are yet to come.
But for now, let us
review 1980 alphabetically.-
BASEBALL (College):
Arizona beat Hawaii 5-3
in the championship game
to win the National Col
legiate Athletic Associa
tion (NCAA) Division I
World Series. Division II
Winner, Cal Poly
Pomona; Division III
Winner, Ithaca.
MAJOR LEAGUE:
The Philadelphia Phillies
defeated Kansas City four
games to two in last
autumn's World Series to
win their first champion
ship in nearly 100 years.
BASKETBALL
(College): The Louisville
Cardinals capped a sizzl
ing season by beating
UCLA 59-54 in the na
tional championship
game. Division II Winner,
Virginia Union; Division
III Winner, North Park.
NATIONAL BASKET
BALL ASSOCIATION:
The Los Angeles Lakers
dominated their Pacific
Division (which housed
defending champion Seat
tle), then won the NBA
championship by downing
powerful Philadelphia
four games to two.
BOXING: The most
primitive, yet most
popular man-to-man sport
in the world provided us
history that will never die.
HEAVYWEIGHTS:
Muhammad Ali, having
retired with the World1
Boxing Association title,
tried a comebak in 1980
against World Boxing
Council champion Larry
Holmes. That . night
(October 2 in Las Vegas),
AH had his last hurrah,
but it was Holmes fittest
hour; as he badly outclass
ed" the 38-year-old legend
to retain his title. Ali," who
had never been stopped,
failed to answer the'
eleventh round bell.
Mike Weaver kayoed
John Tate in the 15th
round on March 3 1 to take
the WBA crown, then
stopped South African
Gefrie Coetzee in the 13th
oftOctober 25 to retain it.
LIGHT HEAVY: Mat
thew Saad Muhammad,,
WBC champ, successfully
defended his title three
times in 1980; the most
satisfying coming against
Yaqui Lopez. .
"Eddie (Gregory)
Mustafa Muhammad
destroyed Marvin
Johnson March 31 to take
the WBA title, then down-.
ed "Jerry Martin in July.
The two- world champion
Muslims aire scheduled to
fight for the) "undisputed
crown in February, 1981.
MIDDLEWEIGHT:
Marvin Hagler demolish
ed Alan Minter in London
to win the undisputed title
lasCSeptember. After the
fight was stopped in only
the third round, MinterV
English supporters were so
disappointed that they;

record to 6-5; 3-1. in
January. The Seahawks
dropped to 2-7. UNCW
has now lost four in a row.
Bishop, who led all
scorers with 31 points, tied
the. score for the Eagles at :
7-all with a corner jumper
atJ6:01. Freshman center
Charles Murphy put the
Eagles ahead for good at
84 with 14:21 to go hit
ting the front end of a two
shot foul.
The Eagles built up a
37-25 halftime lead. They
stretched the mark to
45,25 with 17:48 left
before the Seahawks battl
ed back to cut the margin
to 71-64 at 4:10.
Central went into their
spread offense with Bishp
with 5 points and Sinclair
4 of. the last 11 Eagle
points. f

WELTERWEIGHTS:
The biggest matchup in
years occurred in this,
class, and the main ,
eventers did it twice. On
June 20, Roberta Duran
outpointed Sugar Ray
Leonard, handing the lat
ter his first loss in 28
fights, and taking his
WBC title. On November
25, Leonard humiliated .
Duran for seven rounds,
and the champ quit in the
eighth, complaining of
stomach cramps. For the
two fights, Leonard gross
ed around $20 million,
while Duran hovered
around the $10 'million
mark.
However, another man
waits for either one of the
above headline makers;
WBC champ Tommy
"Hit Man" Hearns.
Hearns won the title by
stopping Pipino Cuevas in
the second round last
August.
FOOTBALL (College):
The University of Georgia,
Bulldogs went through the
regular season 11-0, then
beat Notre Dame 17-10 in
the Sugar Bowl. For their
effort, they were named
the national champions.
NATIONAL FOOT-!
BALL LEAGUE: The Los
Angeles Rams won their
first National Conference1
title by dethroning Dallas,
and then Tampa Bay; but
lost the NFL champion
ship to four-time super
Bowl winner Pittsburgh
31-19.
GOLF (College):
Oklahoma State won the
team title and Jay Don
Blake (Utah State) won
the individual championship.
PROFESSIONAL BIG
FOUR: Jack Nicklaus
made a memorable com
eback by winning both the t
U.S. Open and the PGA.
Tom Watson captured the
British Open, while Steve
Ballesteros took the
Masters.
HORSE RACING: Ge
nuine Risk, a filly, beat
the odds by winning the
Kentucky Derby. Codex
won the Preakness barely
getting by Genuine Risk
on a disputed decision.
Temperance Hill won the
Belmont Stakes.
ICE HOCKEY
(College): North Dakota
won the national title
beating Northern
Michigan 5-2.
OLYMPICS: The
United States put on a
brilliant show and downed
a top Russian squad 4-3,
then defeated Finland 4-2
two days later to win the
gold.
PRO HOCKEY: The
New York Islanders
defeated Philadelphia
four games to two to win
the Stanley Cup.
TENNIS .(College):,
Stanford defeated
California-Berkeley 5-3 to
win the team title. Robert
Van't Hof won the in
dividual championship,
while Tennessee's Mel
Purcell and Rodney Har
mon took the doubles.
PRO TENNIS: Bjorn
Borg won his fifth straight
Wimbledon just escaping
John McEnroe. McEnroe
returned the favor by
defeating Borg for the
U.S. Open. As for the
women, Evonne
Goolagong took
Wimbledon, while Chris
Evert Lloyd won the U.S.
Open.
