John; Avery Boys Club Celebrates 40 Years Of Service
Durham's John Avery Boys Club, Inc.,
observed its 40th anniversary at the organiza
tion's annual meeting and banquet Monday,
February 2.
Mrs. Edith M. Johnson, a member of the
Board of Directors of the Club for nineteen
years, received the Boys Club of Americ?
Bronze Keystone Award.
Members of the John Avery Boys Club
baseball team, 1980 champions in the Little
Tar Heel League, were special guests at the
banquet.
J.M. Schooler, president of the club, thank
ed the corporations, fraternities, sororities,
Sunday School classes, clubs and individuals
whose financial contributions supported the
Boys Club program during 1980. Schooler
noted the deaths of two board members, N.A.
Cheek and J.E. Peele, in 1980, and pledged
continued efforts by the board in providing
"guidance, health promotion, vocational,
social, educational and character development
for our youth."
Herbert E. Tatum, Jr., presented the report
of the nominating committee, which was
unanimously adopted. ', ,
Reelected to four-year terms on the board
were Sam Margolis, W.J. Kennedy, Jr. A.T.

McClinton, Dr. W.A. Cleland, Dr. Thomas K
Bass and Mrs. Charlotte Sloan.
