cond in a series of specials on
America's unique art form
the musical comedy, will air
Wednesday, February 1 1 at 9
p.m. On Center Channel 4.
As in the first program of
the series, Mrs. Kaye, who
Produced and wrote the show,
as selected four classic
American musicals to recreate
in sets, costumes, staging and
orchestration from the
original Broadway produc
tions. . Musical Comedy
Tonight II features highlights
from "Finian's Rainbow,"
"South Pacific," "Lady in the
Dark" and "Sweet Charity."
Danny Kaye recreates the role ,
he introduced on Broadway in
the original production of;
"Lady in the Dark."
Annette Charles, Richard
Crenna, Nancy Dussauh,
Sergio Franchi, Bonnie
Franklin, Jack Lemmon,
Juliet Prowse and Lynn
Redgrave are among the cast
who performs scenes from the
four comedies. Mr. Kaye
also interviews Josh 'Logan,
the original director of "South
Pacific," and Burton Lane,
the 'composer of "Finian's
Rainbow' to round out this
entertaining and informative
evening of American musical
theatre.

harpist Sonny Terry played a
harmonica solo in the musical
"finian's Rainbow."
American Short Story
Returns
One of public television's
finest series returns to the
UNC Center for Public Televi
sion beginning Sunday,
February 8 at 10 p.m. on
Channel 4. The American
Short Story, a series, of 17
stories adapted for television,
brings the work of some of
America's most renown
authors to life.
"The Greatest Man in the
World" by James Thurber
opens the season. This satire
is a classic tale of media hype.
Thurber's hero is Jack "Pal"
Smurch (played by Brad
Davis), a garage mechanic
.turned international hero
when he flies around the world
without stopping (an impossi
ble feat in 1930 when the story
was written). Newspapermen
and politicians try to cap
italize on Smurch's world
wide appeal by making him in
to a symbol of courage and ar
ing. There's just one hitch,
Smurch is a gin-swilling,
' womanizing lout without a
: shred of courage and daring.
When he becomes an embar
1 rassment to those trying to
, "market" his myth, he is done
away with, pushed out an
eighth story window. Only in
death can Jack Smurch be
made to epitomize to the
public a brave, clean-living
hero.
Other adaptations in the
series feature stories by Mark
Twain, Flannery O'Connor,
Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ernest
Hemingway, William
Faulkner, Henry James, John
Updike, Richard Wright and
Willa Cather.
The series includes perfor

Wooden Boatbuilding
Documented
On Harker's Island in May
1977, Earl Rose,1 a boatbuilder
since 1927, layed the keel of
The Peggy Joyce, a 50-foot
sport fishing boat being built
for a man with fishing and
boating businesses in Destra
Florida. The Rose Brothers
Boat Works, a 30-minute film
airing Monday, February 9 at
10:30 p.m. On Center Channel
4, follows the construction of
this boat and documents one
of the most enduring, tradi
tions on the Outer Banks
wooden boatbuilding.
As he has always done, Earl
Rose uses no blueprints. He
does all of his figuring on
scrap pieces pf lumber he picks
up in the yard. Thirteen mon
ths after the project began,
The Peggy Joyce was on her
way to Florida, still not com
plete. Weather and money
delays accounted for much of
the lost time.
The hose Brothers Boat
Works contains no
"narration." Interviews and
musical montages form the
narrative for the building of
The Peggy Joyce.
