The story ,of the John Avery Boys' Club
would not be complete without reference to
the men and women who have volunteered
their services as officers and members of the
Board of Directors of the club during the
past forty years, and the large number of
contributors individuals, churches, Sun
day School classes, Greek letter organiza
tions, garden clubs, labor unions, social and"
civic groups, American Legion, fraternal
organizations, corporations, foundations,
Tobaccoland Kiwanis, Durham Jaycees,
Beauticians Clubs and the United Fund of
Durham all of whom constitute the spon
sors of the John Avery Boys' Club with
voting rights at the annual meetings.
The Durham community is indebted to
the operating staff of the club, both past
and present and to the following executive
directors: the late John E. Payne, 1940-43;
Donald Watson, 1943-September 1, 1945;
Lee W. Smith, Jr., September 1, 1945 - pre
sent. Smith has achieved national recognition
as a Professional Boys Club Worker and is a
member of the Boys' Club Professional
Association.
