Association-Northwestern
Bank Statewide Tennis
Tournament have been
announced by the
American Heart Associa
tion's North Carolina af
filiate. This popular tennis
event, which offers
players of all ages and
abilities a variety of events
in which to compete at
local, district, and state
levels, also provides par
ticipants with the oppor
tunity to contribute,
through payment of entry
fiees, to the work of the
Heart . Association
North Carolina.

7 Volkamenia Club Meeting
The regular meeting of the Volkamenia Literary Club
was held February 12 at the home of Mrs. Virginia
Alston, president.
Club members were appreciative of the attractive pro
grams and table decorations which carried out the
Valentine motif .
4; Mrs. Julia Harris, in charge of program, prepared an
interesting and informative program using , the club
theme: "Literature of Human Rights" and correlating
lme with Black History Month. . ),-. - a ,
AThe presentation consisted of two parts. The first part
was a recording entitled: "Adventures in Negro
History." The second part was entitledV'The Struggle
0f Negro Women." All the material in the second part,
was based on clippings from The Carolina Times. Mrs.
Harris has made extensive use of the column that ap
pears weekly, under the heading "Things You Should
Know," From the earliest struggles of Sojourner Truth
and Harriet Tubman, hese cuppings were arranged and
discussed in sequence.
Lerone Bennett, Jr., has said that "Black History is
history and must be interpreted historically against the
larger backdrop of the unfolding stream of world
history."

when Delaware State
upset Howard 76-74,
dropping the defending
champion to 5-4, with a

Delaware State brought its
family mark to 3-6.
Florida A&M is in a

South Carolina State in
.overtime Friday, 87-86.
Bethune-Cookman (4-5)

Thrifty Service Club
?JThe Thrifty Service Club met with Mrs. Milie
Williams February 14. Devotions were led by Mrs.
Geneva Rogers. Mrs. Beatrice Holman read a Valentine
' poem entitled "I Love You."
Minutes were read and approved.
:The club's decision to buy fuel for a needy family was
delivered to the family in the form of a check.
Mesdames Vanhook and Davis investigated a family
that had been reported in need of fuel. It was confirmed
soihe club donated the amount needed for this family.
iOeport was given on a gift the club ha made at
I Christmas.
-Following the meeting, Mrs. Williams served a
delicious dinner to those present, and many gifts were
given Mrs. Williams for her birthday.
Others present were Mesdames Pearlie Walker, Luna
Holman, Queenie Cooper, Rosetta Cobb, Geneva
Rogers, Lula Hester, Louise Thompson, Mattie Jones,
Wpe Mae Jones, Mable Bryant, Vergie Mangum,
Bessie Pratt and Retha Core.
The next meeting will be held with Mrs. Geneva
Rogers.
