Magkt, Ph.D MJPJL A recent increase in thyroid cancer has alarmed the medi cal community. The cause of most of these cases can be traced back 25-35 years when good medical practice pre scribed low dosages of radia tion for treatment of facial acne or an enlarged thymus gland. When radiation was : first widely used in the 1920's it was considered safe medical treatment. But the full effects of it were not understood. Radiologists suffered severely damaged hands from over-exposure to X-rays and many later developed leukemia. Radiation is strange to most people. It can't be tasted or touched. Most of the time it can't been seen or heard. Some of it is good even re quired to maintain health. Some isn't. We live with it day after day and very few really know what it does to them. Radiation comes from the sun. X-rays used in medical and dental examinations, televi sion sets, microwave ovens, soil and even the body. Some is natural, some is created by man. Some radiation can cure man's ills, some kills him. Radiation is energy moving through' space as invisible rays. The "beat" or frequency of the wave-like pattern it follows determines its effect on people. We are always sur rounded by radiation. Two common examples are heat and light both very benefi cial to our life. Radiation is dangerous be cause it has the ability to penetrate the skin and bring about changes in the moleeu- IKPORTANT KEWS FOR 50itro(t8erthii0oja'j. The sun's ultraviolet rays can be particularly dan gerous because the skin read fly absorbs them. There are two types of ra diation. Ionizing radiation creates electrically-charged ions that can disrupt body processes and cause death. X-rays, nuclear weapons and television sets are common examples. Non-ionizing radia tion does not produce ions, but it disrupts body proc esses, usually only causing sickness. However, large doses can be fatal. Light, sound and microwaves are common types. Man's greatest risk comes from sources of radiation he controls. Medical and dental X-rays account for 80 to 90 percent of this kind of radia tion. Fortunately, television sets and microwave ovens emit radiation at levels generally too low to be hazar dous. For your own safety it is best to avoid unnecessary medical and dental X-rays. And to minimize your risk of exposure, do not sit too close while watching color televi sion or stand adjacent to an operating microwave oven. by the Health Department, Gen eral Conference of the Seventh -day Adventist Church, as a community ervice.
