Miss Mattie Carolyn Hall
Engagement Announced
PITTSBURGH, PA. Miss Mattie Carolyn
"Carol" Hall, television newscaster at WTAE-TV, the
ABC affiliate in Pittsburgh, and Clifford C. Cooper, a
prominent attorney and partner in the firm of Cooper
and Lancaster, Pittsburgh, plan to be married in June.
The wedding will take place in Webster Groves,
Missouri. ; '
Their engagement has been announced by Reverend
and Mrs. William E. Hall of Kirkwood, Missouri,
parents of the bride-to-be. Mrs. Cecilia Gladys Faucette
of Durham, North Carolina, is the maternal grand
mother of the bride-to-be..;
The prospective bridegroom is the son of Clifford C.
Cooper, Sr., of Cleveland, Ohio and the late Mrs. Flet
cher Lee Cooper of Washington, Pennsylvania, he
received his undergraduate and law degrees from the
University of Pittsburgh.
Miss Hall, a native of Kirkwood Missouri, a suburb
of St. Louis, graduated from Kirkwood High School, is
an alumna of Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri
and Columbia University in New York. As a television
newscaster and reporter, Miss Hall has worked in Mem
phis, New York and Washington, D.C. Her father is a
retired Veterans Administration Hospital chaplain and

also a retired public school teacher.

Ladies Aid Society Meets
The regular monthly meeting of the Ladies Aid Socie
ty was held at the home of Mrs. Barbara L. Faulk on
Bedford Avenue recently. The home was beautifully
decorated with potted plants.
The hostess served a very delicious brunch prior to the
business session which was presided over by Mrs. Mary
T. Horton, the president.
An interesting discussion was held by members pre
sent: Mesdames Margaret Allen, Mary Byrd, Julia
Freeland, Sallie Graham, Margaret Hedgepeth, Ella
Jackson, Mary P. Jarmon, Helen R. Jones, Mary B.
Love, Mary McClary, Harriette Miller, Florence Ogan.i
Naomi Parker, Clara Perkins, Josie Powell, Hazel
Rich, Bessie Wagstaff and Sadie Winston.
The March meeting will be held at the home of Mrs.
Mary L. McClary with Mrs. Naomi Parker and Mrs.
Mary B. Love as co-hostesses.
The Friendly Ladies Meet .
The Friendly ladies met at 807 S. Duke Street Sun
day, March 1 , with Mrs. Susie Dilihunt and Mrs. Gussie
Ray as hostesses, assisted by Mrs. Carrie Green and
Mrs. Almena Hinton. 1
The meeting was called to order by the president,
Mrs. Hastie Price. After the business session, a
delightful repast was served.
Members present were: Mmes. Iola Massey,
Catherine Trice, Lennie Rose, Betty Green, Lina M.
Saunders, Louise Smith, Viola Thompson, Elizabeth
Edwards, Agnes Hinton, Almena Hinton, Susie
Dihhunt, Dwyane Lassiter, Hannah Roberson, Annie
Cruse, Mattie Tilman, Magdaline Llewellyn, Myrtle
Taylor, Myrtle Weeks, Mary Hayes, Evangeline Page
and Gussie Ray.
The next meeting will be with Mrs. Hinton, Mrs.
Price and Miss Cruse.
Rollingwood
Community Club
Plans were made for a Grocery Raffle to be held on
May 28, by members of the Rollingwood Community
Club during their meeting at the home of Mrs. Hattie
. Bass, 1605 Nixon Street, last Thursday. Members will
be selling tickets for $1 which will give each buyer three
chances to win as three prizes will be offered. Proceeds
will be used to help finance any need that may arise con
cerning their neighbors.
All eleven members were present. They are Mmes.
Margie Crawford, Ruby Hughes, Emily Williams, Ethel
Robinson, Hattie Bass, Margaret Morrison, Rosa
Spearman, Rath Davis, Nellie Edger, Matilda Barbee
and Beatrice Howell. Pictures were made of the group.:
Plans are being made for the club's third anniversary
celebration on Jurie 28, which will include a choir con
cert at Ebenezer Baptist Church on Alston Avenue.

Mrss Hazel Parker was hostess for the monthly
meeting of the Ever-Ready Club. The meeting was
opened and presided over by the president, Mrs. Esther
, Moore.
A lovely repast was served to those present: Mmes.
Mary Patterson, Fence Revels, Lear Lee, Louise
Rogers, Beatrice Edgerton, Esther Moore, Tessie Cross,
fcdna Royster, Jean McCamey, Dot Holloway, Savater
Hunter, Bessie Jones, Louise Lee, Clara Taylor and
Josephine Harris.
The next meeting is scheduled for 3 p.m., in the base
ment of Orange Grove Church. Mrs. Esther Moore and
Miss Sharon Moore will be hostesses.
ARTHUR HALL AFRO-AMERICAN DANCE
ENSEMBLE The Carolina Union will present the
Philadelphia-based Arthur Hall Afro-American Dance
ensemble on Wednesday, March 18, at 8 p.m., in
Memorial Hall on the UNC campus. Combining the
African dance with American insight, he Ensemble em
bodies the modern spirit of black culture. Tickets are $5
for students, $6 for general public and are available
through the Carolina Union box Office, 933-1449. Visa
and Mastercard are accepted.
EXPECTANT PARENTS Red Cross will offer a
six week course for expectant parents beginning 7 p.rri.,
Wednesday, March II, at Red Cross Center, located at
1000 E. Forest Hills Blvd. Classes will meet for six con
secutive Wednesday nights. ; K
Topics include: Prenatal Care and Nutrition, Labor
and Delivery Including Exercises and Breathing Pat-,
terns, Bottle and Breastfeeding, The Newborn, Bath
Demonstration, and Child Care Through The First
Year.
The course is specifically designed for both prospec
tive parents, but mothers are welcome to come alone.
Participants may attend selected or all of the class ses
sions and will be awarded a course certificate according
ly. Mrs. Ekonza M. Brown, R.N., is the instructor for
this course.
Persons interested in taking the course should call the
Red Cross office, 489-6541 and register.
HASSLE HOUSE will celebrate the tenth anniversary
of its service to Durham on Sunday, March 15. The
public is invited to come to 1022 Urban Avenue, next to
the Watts Street Baptist Church, for free refreshments
starting at 12 noon. Hassle House's history of volunteer
involvement will be celebrated by the community.
BOTTLE BILL ISSUE - NX. Representative David
Diamont will discuss the Bottle' Bill issue at the meeting
of the Research Triangle Goup, Joseph Leconte
Chapter, Sierra Club, on Thursday, March 12, at 8
p.m., in Dreyfuss Audiforium, Research Triangle In
stitute. The public is encouraged to attend this impor
tant meeting. j'
PAGE (Parents for the Advancement of Gifted
Education), Durham Chapter, will hold its next meeting
on Wednesday, March 11, at 7:30 p.m., First
Presbyterian Church of Durham at Main and Roxboro.

The Durham City Community Education program and
the Durham Parks and Recreation Department are con
ducting Afterschool Recreation Programs at Y.E.

through June 5. The hours are Monday through Friday.
