C Vv ft, '' " 12 THE CAROLINA TIMES Brotherhood Day Deemed A Success , By Dould E. AldWmaa Last Tuesday .was a night to cogiute the real meaning of love and most importantly, brotherhood. It was a night to ponder the role the church should play in promoting brotherhood. It was a nighr to learn the Biblical perspective of brotherhood. It was a night to think over Chris tian brotherhood and whether it is inclusive or exclusive. In essence, it was a night to speculate upon how to achieve brotherhood. The occasion was the first annual "Brother Day Observation Celebra tion," sponsored by the United Christian Ministry of North Carolina Central University. Dr. Ruth Kennedy, NCCU English professor, addressed the audience, while Rev. Milton Lew, Duke Divinity School, of fered a theological perspective of brotherhood. Brotherhoos as a unity of men aspiring common goals, interets, and ex periences has not been at tained or realized, says Dr. Kennedy, adding, the binding of the poor and rich to insure racial justice is an unfinished task. Brotherly love is best realized and expressed by action and demonstration. Brotherhood must be achieved in "truth and deed"; word of mouth is not enough. Although man may not be equal in achievement, talent, background, culture, or race, "AH men are brothers; all men share a common destiny", Dr. Kennedy said. A "Universal ailment" that ignores brotherhood or the presence of God is the persistent and con sisten presence of racial injustice. The church should be the motivating vehicle of brotherhood; however, the church has not spoken out loudly and vigorously against racism, prejudice and, gtiW-tacM ills, but rather has been an active non-participant and a big deterrent to brother ly love. The church must . actively deal with man be ing disfigured by injustice and oppression. The "saved" a : separated from th "unsaved" in that thei lifestyle is different. "W actively, daily live by th teaching of Christ.' However, Christians an not segregated from socie ty; we actively seek to tx brothers with all men ant share in the teachings 01 Christ," Rev. Lewu declared. Also the church has a divine obligation tc address all social ills; to actively seek their causes, and to execute their remedies. Hence, Christ ian brotherhood is in clusive and exclusive. The occasion was part of the campus ministry out-reach program, designed to enlighten all students and to express the need for brotherly love. A success it was, indeed. .. From a theological perspective, brotherhood is to honor, love, respect, and cherish all mankind by lending support and en couragement, Rev. Lewu said. To prejudge man because , of color is a "cancer of the soul." "The redeemini quality of man is to sensi , kinship with all men. Mat was made in God's imagi and is worthy to be treatet as such". Dr. Kenned; concluded. The mute swan it so-calk . because it is said never to u its voice in captivity. - LOVELOVI YHVTHYT P3GX3GJ Help your neigh boi throughout the country b upportiflf The Salvatio Army'f work with the youii. od old, the ick, tb troubled and the poor. r. - UT.BASCJIflUSI 1 A I V W toff TT fcJUMBOv ; sjgv SAVE 51 C , n C7 GRADE 'A1 WHITE isr. rfSIS n-w.ifw.fjaw FRESH PORK iN S 3 1 . - T V I QUARTER CD2JZ ( c JJ jumbov V A LOINS .OT Jrr A LA Aik "HW-MW0 Js- 1 LOINS i $1.1 9 -VN WITH $7.50 OB MOM CDEB 2i 7bK3a- 1 x: 'VfffirjMP' Your Food Dollar Goes With Deep-Cut Specials & Further PRICES GOOD THRU SAT., MARCH 14TH NONE TO DEALERS WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO LIMIT QUANTITIES COPYRIGHT 1981 WINN-DIXIE RALEIGH, INC.
