UPI Photo Eagles Announce '81 Football Slate NCCU Head Football' Coach and Athletic Direc tor has announced the 1981 North Carolina Cen tral football schedule. The Eagles, defending CIAA champions last year with a 7-0 conference mark and 7-3 overall, look to make it two straight crowns this year. All conference schools are playing a ten-game pions meeting on November 21 to decide the CIAA champion for 1981. The Eagles have added perennial power Virginia Union, Norfolk State and B6wie State to their 1981 slate. t Missing will Virginia State, Elon Col lege, Elizabeth City State,; and Jackson State. ' For the second straight year, the Eagles will have; Liv- District of Columbia (Oct. 17), Bowie State (Oct. 31) and Norfolk State (Nov. 14). The annual clash with arch-rival North Carolina A&T State that is held on; the last Saturday, before! Thanksgiving wfll'pc held' this year on November 28 ' the Saturday after Thanksgiving. North Carolina Central, defending CIAA Cham pions, open their spring practice Tuesday, March 24 at the practice field. 63 players and walk-ons are expected by third year coach Henry C. Lat timore. The Eagles went 7-0 in the CIAA, 7-5 overall. It marked the first time since 1963 that the Eagles had won the CIAA football championship. Central left the CIAA in 1971 arid returned in 1980. "We will be looking at our quarterback very closely this spring." lamented Lattimore. The Eagles lost Charles Yuille and Ken Pugh to gradua tion and have only James Faison with any game ex perience. However, Faison didn't throw a pass last year. "Right now, the spot is up for grabs bet ween Faison, Danny Smith and Gerald Bridgers. Neither Smith or Bridgers saw any action , year but had a year learn ing our system." added the Central coach. The Eagles return their top three ruhningbacks and Ail-American can didates at split end and linebacker. In Roscoe Burnette, Michael Worthy and Ben nie Tate the Eagles have 1597 of their some 1700 yards rushing output. Burnette led the Eagles with 660 yds while playing in only 7 games. He was sidelined when hit in the Elizabeth City game. Split end Victor Hunter finished third in the con ference in receiving with 34 catches for 495 yards and 9 tds. , .Linebacker Chris McKinstry has led the team in tackles for the past two seasons. He is looked to for a banner year. it ' Eagles 1-1 At Break; Look For Winning Year The NCCU tennis team, 1-1 at spring break under the veteran coach Harry Edmonds, looks for another winning season in its remaining eight mat-: ches. They will do it without a lot of inex perience players. "We are very inex-, perienced." retorted Ed monds. We have only two players who played last 'year and one of them was a fill-in. We are looking for Walter Webb to be our No. 2 man and Jeff Campbell to play at No. 4." added the venerable coach. ;.; Freshman, have battled for the other spots with Milton Vann of Wilm ington's Laney holding the top spot to date. Fred Holland is playing No. 3, with Alexander McCall and Ronald Russell having played No. 5. Mark Bryant has been the No. 6 man. , The Eagles dropped an 8-1 decision to Winston Salem on March 3 and re bounded with a 7-2 win over Livingstone College three days later. Central returns to ac tion Tuesday, March 24 when they host Johnson C. Smith at 1 p.m. at Elmira Park. Lisa, a graduate of Jordan High School, is a student at the University of Tennessee. The 4x200 relay time was 1:37.82 and the 40 relay time was 3:38.88. The Volunteers finished third in competition. Softballers Play at Campus Hffls Field The NCCU Softball team hosts Winston-Salem State and Elizabeth City Tuesday, March 24 in con tests beginning at 1 p.m. at Campus Hills Field.
