with minority-owned and
operated supliers in the
United States during 1980, '
Chairman Roger B. Smith
reported today.
"This is a -.record for

by 13 percent," Mr. Smith

program has increased to
994 in 1980.

CHAPEL HILL
Chuck Stone, senior
editor and columnist for
the Philadelphia Daily
News, will visit the
University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill on
March 22 to speak on
minorities working the
media.
The free public lecture
will be held at 8 p.m. in
Hamilton Hall
auditorium.
Stone has been a con
gressional aide, a White
House correspondent and
a television commentator.
He is the founder of the
National Association for
Black Journalists and one
of the first blacks to
become a columnist for a
daily newspaper in the
United States.
Stone's visit will coin
cide with a special
minorities conference at
the UNC-CH Scholl of
Journalism. The con
ference, which will be held
for about. 25 North
Carolina newspaper
editors, is designed to en
courage the hiring of more
minority journalists. It is
sponsored by the
American Society of
Newspaper Editors and
the Gannett Newspaper
Foundation, Inc.
