Booker NEW YORK, NY Up until 1975 the playoff games of the City University of New York basketball tournament only attracted audiences of 25 and the finals had only about 100 in the stands. Then Con Edison began pro viding help in audience development and publicity. So this year found more than 28,000 fans attending the playoffs and finals, a record, and Staten Island College, winner of the . tournament was invited to particpate in the NCAA's Division 111, evidence of the increased stature of the tournament. When ask ed about so few black managers, Robinson explain ed, "it's the attitude in our complete society. So why should baseball or sports be different?" But he added that "fans don't come out to the ballpark to see the manager. They dorrt care what color he is." Michael Schultz, Hollywood's most successful black director, has taken over "Family Dream," now, called "Bustin' Loose," the film starring Richard Pryor) and Cicely Tyson that had to1 do retakes after Pryor suf fered a near fatal accident last year. WABC-TV's newscasterj John Johnson filed a suit alleging racial discrimination against the station last year and a settlement said the sta tion would feature him in a regular series along with other assignments. Johnson was host of "Air Mail Special" the show suddenly yanked off the air last week because some of the letters it said were from fans actually came from staff. Stationi said -that Johnson was,notj party to the deception and station's confession that all was not on the up-and-up might stave off an FCC in vestigation. In. Washington, WDVM TV added a twist to the syn dicated miniseries Roots with an accompanying series of locally produced one-minute profiles of black Americans called "Family Tree," highlighting achievement of 18 prominent blacks in history from Benjamin Ban neker who helped to design the city of Washington to Muhammed Ali. A forthcoming book, The, Washington Reporters by Stephen Hess has the follow ing quotes: "In all types of Washington news organiza tions most reports are male,; white, urban and Nor theastern. Some organiza tions, of course, are more ur ban (network television), some more mae (wire ser vices), and some more white (specialized publications)." . Tony Brown's Journal's next segment centers in on Philadelphia, the once gang ridden, high-crime arena of the East Coast that Tony, says now has as its symbol of unity in the black communi ty, two community groups that have turned gang leaders into useful members of the community and marginal1 students into scholars.
