"We believe that this summer's ar tists indicate that the fan tastic creative fire of modern dance is continuing to burn." Each of the. selected choreographers presents a different idea of dance. While Charles Moulton is concerned with the relation ship of athletics to dance and' creates awe-inspiring; mind boggling games that require extraordinary .mental and physical skill, Johanna Boyce's dances reflect her concern with discovering the extraordinary in the. oiv dinary; she is not- concerned with . the obvious use of physical virtuosity that is often associated with dance. Marleen Pennison's dances indicate her fascination withj character and theatre, and' have been -likened to short-1 stories or small dramas. The electric energy, drive and force of Molissa Fenley's work takes dance in yet a more abstract direction, while Bill T. Jones, who often uses dialogue in his dances, has been acclaimed for the humanity of his work and the spell-binding force of his performance. These performers were selected from over 50 applicants. 'Sophisticated Ladies ' Being Recorded By RCA Red Seal NEW YORK, N. Y. -Sophisticated Ladies, & retrospective revue of the music of Duke Ellington and Broadway's newest smash hit musical, is being recorded by RCA Red Seal. Announcement was made by Thomas Z. When Sophisticated Ladies opened at the Lunt Fontanne Theatre, New York's critics joined in hearp ing lavish praise on the pro duction. The Times' Frank Rich wrote: Sophisticated Ladies, the new musical revue at the Lunt-Fontanne is an Ell ington celebration that just won't quit until it has won over the audience with dynamic showmanship." Douglas Watt of the Daily News wrote: "The Duke would have been pleased, I think. Although Sophisticated Ladies, a sleek song and dance show that opened at the Lunt-Fontanne touches but lightly on the genius of the late Edward Kennedy Ellington, whose music has coursed through the century like a lively, twisting stream, it has flash and class and above all, some of the elegance that was always his. I loved it mad ly." William Raidy of Newhouse Newspapers declared: "Edward Kennedy Ellington. ..Duke to the world that made him king of jazz... was a towering figure for more than half a century in contemporary music, and Sophisticated Ladies is a lov ing and long overdue tribute to his genius. Like the great jazz musician and composer, who called his autobiography Music Is My mistress, it brims over with vitality and talent." The original cast album is being recorded at RCA's New York recording studios and will be rushed to release.
