SAT., APRIL IS, 1981 THE CAM LM TIKES -5 MEAC Outdoor Track And Field Prospectus MEAC Spring Championship Set For Tallahassee April 17-18 MEN Florida A&M: The FAMU Rattlers held to true tradition by winning last year's MEAC Track and Field Cham pionship in their very first try. Coach Bobby Lang returns 22 of 25 athletes from his 1979-80 squad in cluding Alphonso Williams (MEAC Outstanding Track Athlete), who won both the 880 yard run and the mile. First place MEAC winners William Hayes (100), Gino Wauben (javelin), Terrace Hinson (high jump), Wayman Daniels (440 hurdles), also return. Hinson's seven foot jump broke a MEAC record. Ed Rush and Greg Davis are back to join Williams on the mile relay team, which broke the MEAC record. S.. State: South Carolina State had won three MEAC Championships in a row until last year, but surpris ingly returns 15 lettermen. They should be excep tionally tough in the sprints with Rocky Cunn ingham, Steve Martin and John Hinson. The Bulldogs are also expected to do well in sprint relays, shuttle hurdle relays and open hurdles. Tim Schriver, who holds the conference pole vault record (14 ft.) also returns. Coach Robert Johnson recruited several; impressive high school stars, and the future looks bright. Delaware State: j DelState's Track team and ! Coach Joe Burden finish ed third in the MEAC last season, the lowest they had ever finished.; Burden's freshman-' dominated 1 979-80 team j has matured a bit, and1 should be much improved. William Merritt, Nate. Neal and Dean Wilson are expected to do well in the power events, and1 Everette Hayes, who set a new MEAC record in the three-mile run returns. Howard University: The Howard Bison, . who finished only one point behind Delaware ' State, returns MEAC record-breaking high jumper Sherman; Washington, along with Ed Simms (second in 440), Rob Brown (second in 120 hurdles), and Chappell Henderson (second in 440! hurdles). Coach William Moultrie lost only one! athlete off his young club,; and is expected to do well this season. NCA4T: Coach Mel Pinckney handled the NCA&T track team for the first time last season. inH with one year behind him, should do much better. There were 16 Aggie freshmen on the squad, but they are now more seasoned. Pinckney must replace utility man Keith Holmes, if NCA&T expects to be competitive. Bethune-Cookman: Coach Alvin Wyatt and the Wildcats will be going after the MEAC Cham pionship for the first time in 1981 . B-CC has a quali ty program, and is ex pected to hold its own in the conference. WOMEN Howard: Coach Ron Woods and his Lady Bison won the first-ever Women's MEAC Track Champion ship last April, and return a fine nucleus for the com ing season. Caroline Delancy, who won the 220 yard dash, returns along with MEAC-winning 440 and one mile relay team mates Rosalind Love, Debra Murphy, and Felicia Moore. Sheila Belle, who won both the .shot put and discus, 1C returns. Delancy ana Woods were named Outstanding Athlete and Coach of the Year after last year's MEAC Meet. FAMU: Intense FAMU coach Sara Hill has all of her second-place MEAC team back, and wants to avenge the two-point loss to Howard. Runner-up Outstanding Athlete, Malinda Prescott, won both the 880 and the mile last April. Other first place winners were Mary Sexton (long jump), Bar bara Tucker (1 10 hurdles), and Patrice McGugan (440 hurdles). .... Delaware State: Delaware State finished, only four points behind! FAMU last season, but will have a new coach in Scotty Elliott. He is op timistic since none of the Lady Hornets were lost through graduation. In the MEAC, Arlene McMillian won the high jump, Janise Dale, the 440, and Lori Dowers was second in the 100. The 440 and mile relay teams also did very well. Sherice Smaw finished second in the shot put and discus. S.C. State: Coach Willie Simon and his Lady Bulldogs were a little disappointed last year, but with a more ex perienced squad, should be much improved. He returns Catherine Horton, who won the 100, and finished a close second in the 220; along with Fay Parker, second in the 440. NCA&T: Mel Pinckney, who handles the men also, has the ladies for the first time Senior Jackie Toomer should give him some help in the power events, and Pam Christian is a capable this season, and he has hi? work cut out since the Ag giettes scored only three points in the MEAC Meet, sprinter. Bet.hune-Cookman: Coach Alvin Wyatt and his Lady Wildcats are ex pected to be a factor in the MEAC Championships, after a great season a year ago. I - IJq ten j h.:V' yv The - Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's spr ing championships (outdoor track and field for men and women, ten nis for both, and golf) will be held April 17 and 18, Friday and Saturday, hosted by Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida. The Tenth Annual MEAC Track and Field championships will be conducted in FAMU's new Track and Field Com plex,, said to be among the best; tennis will be held on the campus' Gaither Athletic Complex Courts, and golf will be played at Seminole Golf Course. There will be a 7 p.m. scratch meeting for coaches Thursday night in the Gaither Gymnasium, Room 218; and the 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1, scoring system is in effect for track and field. Scoring for tennis and golf will be-congruent with NCAA guidelines. The latter two are being Hazel Plummer Bowling Scores The Hazel B. Track and field gets under way at 1 p.m. Fri day, and 1:30 p.m. Satur day; tennis is set for 9 a.m. on both days, while golf championships are. scheduled for 10 a.m. Fri day, and 7 p.m. Saturday. An admission fee of SI will be charged for all seats at Friday's track and field trials, and the same for general tickets on Saturday, but reserve seatirfg is S2 on the final day: There is no admission charge for golf and tennis. Saxon, an , assistant football coach at Winston-Salem State since 1979, has accepted a similar position at South Carolina State College. Saxon, a native of Col-! umbia, S.C, and a North I Carolina Central graduate, will serve as of fensive line coach for the Bulldogs, replacing Ike Arnold who held the posi tion the last two seasons. Saxon's varsity coaching career began in 1975 at the University of Wisconsin-LaCross where he served as defensive line 1 coach and assistant women's basketball coach. He moved to the State University of New York at ' Courtland in 1977 as of-' fensive line coach and was elevated to defensive coor- -dinator and linebacker coach at the university a year later. Saxon joined the Winston-Salem State staff as offensive line coach in 1979. At North Carolina Cen-, tral, Saxon was a two sport standout. He let tered in football four years while earning Ail American, All-Conference and All-NAIA honors. Saxon received the letter in baseball three years. In addition to his bachelor's, Saxon holds a Master of Science in physical education from Wisconsin-La Cross. Saxon is married to Col umbia native, the former Miss lone Dreher, a 1974 S.C.
