nison have been seen primarily
in New York City's downtown
theatres and Soho lofts,- but.
this summer they will be giveli
national exposure when the
1981 ADF brings them to
North Carolina as part of
ADF's "Emerging Genera
tion" series, a program
dedicated to commissioning
and presenting new works by
unknown, but exceptionally
gifted young choreographers.
The. "Emerging Generation"
performances will take place
July 7 -12 this summer.
While this is the fourth sum
mer that the ADF has
presented this series since the
program's inception 12 years
ago in New London, Connec
ticut this summer marks the
series debut in North
Carolina. The ADF moved to
Durham in 1978. This series
will mark the ADF's first per
formances at the Stewart
Theatre at N. C. State Univer
sity in Raleigh.
The program began in
1969-7Q when the ADF com
missioned new dances from
the then unknown Twyla
Tharp, Yvonne Rainer,
Meredith Monk and James
Cunningham, among others.
Distinguished alumni from
subsequent ADF "Emerging"
programs have included the
Pilobous Dance Theatre
(1974); Laura Dean (1974);
Trisha Brown (1974); Senta
Driver (1977); and Douglas
Dunn (1977).

talent to the public's attention

choreographers , by commis
sioning jiew works and presen
ting them in performance."
said ADF Director Charles
Reinhart. "We believe that
this summer's artists indicate
that the fantastic creative fire
of modern dance is continuing
to burn."
Each of the selected
choreographers presents a dif
ferent idea of dance. While
Charles Moulton is concerned
with the relationship of
athletics to dance and creates
awe-inspiring, mind-boggling
games that require extraor
dinary mental and physical,
skill, Johanna Boyce's dances
reflect her concern with
discovering the extraordinary
in the ordinary; she is not con
cerned with the obvious use of1
physical virtuosity that is often '
associated with dance.
Marleen Pennison's dances in
dicate her fascination with
character and theatre, and'
have been likened o short
stories or small dramas. The
electric energy, drive and force
of Molissa Fenley's work takes
dance in yet a more abstract
direction, while Bill T. Jones,
who often uses dialogue in his
dances, has been acclaimed for
the humanity of his work and
the spell-binding force of his
performance.
These performers were
selected from over 50 applicants.

it originally began "Way down upon the Ppe Dee River.'

And he has expressed some of that
concern in his participation vMh the
National Fund for Minority Engineering
Students.
ITiefurxi is a nonprofit organea
too attempting to increase the number
of Blacks. Puerto Rcans. Chcanos.
Mexican-Americans and American
Indians enrolled n engineering schools
These under-represented 'minorities
constitute a rich untapped resource to
help fit the growing need for engineers,
a need that is expected to continue
through the mid-1 980s.
