1 :; 10-TKE CAROLINA TIKES SAT., MAY 2. 1981 Clubs and Socials Delta Seminar For Teens Held In Chapel Hill Lyon Park Rose Garden Club Yahama Social Club ' The Yahama Social Gub met on Sunday, April 26, at the home of James and Marjoric Johnson. The meeting was opened with the singing oft he Club song. Follow ing the reading of minutes, and committee reports, business discussions took place. The following activities are planned: the Club's Thir teenth Anniversary Celebration to be held Saturday, June 13, at the Downtowner Motor Inn, and a summer outing to Busch Garden.. (The Old Country) in Williamsburg, Virginia, for members and their families on Saturday, June 27. A contribution was given to the United Negro College fund and plans are underway to award a scholarship to a needy high school senior to fur ther hisher education. Birthday honorees for April were Marjorie Johnson, Rosa Edwards and Lauretta Hayes. "Happy Birthday" was sung to them by the club members. The host and hostess served a delicious meal to the following persons: Roscoe and Zola Baines, Ruth Choatc. Gwehdella demons, Kenneth and Retnell demons, Richard and Rosalyn Cole, Rosa Edwards, Pearl Haskins, Lauretta Hayes, James and Ethel Hug gins, Bill an nd Marie Moize, Elizabeth Pretty, Clara Tate, Velton and Edna Thompson, and Pauline Throckmorton. The May meeting will be held on Sunday, the 24th, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Moize at 6 p.m. Teenage Health Fair Sixty teenagers from junior and senior high schools around Durham met recently the Alfonso Elder Student Union on the NCCU campus, to hear speakers and par ticipate in the Continental Society's "I'm Coming Out" rap session. Topics included "Coping as a Teenager," "Teen Sexuality," "Communicating with Parents" and "Peer Pressure." Ms. Joyce Garrett Kimball, a health educator for the Durham County Health Department, Ms. Nancy Rowland, director of admissions, NCCU, and Dr. Mary Vernon, pediatrician at Duke Medical Center, spoke and answered questions submitted by the audience. The teenagers actively participated in each session and appeared excited when they could relate to familiar situations they encounter at home, school and in their daily activities. The sessions were climaxed with remarks from Mrs. Gracie Rogers, chapter president. A drawing was held and eleven door prizes were awarded. Prizes included certificates to Skate Inn, Record Bar, Doug's Seafood, and McDonald's. Refreshments were served and music was by Walter Allen. ' The Continental Societies, Inc., with 28 chapters throughout the; U.S., has as its main purpose to foster, promote and develop the welfare of children. In order to improve the overall opportunities of our youth and develop an atmosphhere of well being, the Continentals work In four program areas: health, education, employ ment arTcreation. " Thrifty Savings Club The Thrifty Savings Club met for its annual Easter Breakfast fellowship. The. gala affair was arranged by Mrs. Christine Sales. Many thanks were extended to the club's faithful members and friends. Those attending were Mesdames Aline Davis, Luna J. Holman, Marie McMillian, Christine Sales, Lula Hester, Queenie Cooper, Geneva Rogers, Beatrice Holman, Willie Mae Jones, Mattie Jones, Mary Vanhook, Stattie Russ, Elizabeth Edwards, Pearlie Walker, Millie Williams. Dr. Hawkins' talk led into students forming groups (o investigate ways of conflict management and self-awareness as well a further elaboration on topics presented earlier. . ., ' . The groups were facilitated by Dr. Dcnisc Barnes, clinical psychologist at UNC; MichacLYoung and Ms. Irma Best, Ph.D. candidates in clinical psychology at UNC; Ms. Carolyn Moore, Ph.D. candidate in clinical psychology from St. Louis University; and Clifton Cot ton, graduate student id counseling psychology at UNC. ACC Rookie of the Year from UNC, Sam Perkins, ended the seminar by highlighting some of the problems he encounters in organized sports and the problem solv ing techniques he uses to resolve them. The seminar was sponsored by the Chapel Hill Carrborp Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Thcta Sorority, Inc., a public service organization ; A class of four and five year old youngster from Tod dler's Academy performed two dances for senior Citizens at Pine Knoll Rest Home on April 15 and at J.J.
