of press performance, will
, premiere Thursday, May 7, at
8 p.m. on Center Channel 4.

half-hour magazines will
feature Hodding Carter,
former Assistant Secretary of
State for Public Affairs, as its
anchorman and chief cor
respondent. "Inside Story" will utilize
film, tape and commentary to
illustrate and examine how the
press including television
and radio news, newspapers
and news magazines handle
developments in the news.
Each program will concentrate
on how well the news con
sumer was served by press
coverage.
This new series will include
specific examples of what the
program's editors consider to
be .good or bad press perfor
mance, feedback from those
who themselves are criticized
on the series, commentary by
Carter on First Amendment
issues, privacy, and other
-issuesof concern to both the
press and public. In addition
to examining coverage of na
tional and international
stories, the series will regularly
provide insights and commen
tary on local coverage around
the country, concentrating on
print and broadcast news away
from the New York
Washington axis.
"This project is consistent,
with everything I have worked
for iii my professional and
public life," Carter said. "We
are not out to get' the press1
but to examine its perfor
mance with care. The press is

scrutiny, as other institutions
are."
Also included among the
program's weekly features will
be brief segments on the
foibles of the news business by
the comedy and satire team of
Bob and Ray (Bob Elliott and
Ray Goulding). According to
series creator Ned Schnurman,
"Bob and Ray will help to
keep things in perspective for
us. Most of what goes on in
the news is a very serious mat
ter, but any business which
takes itself too seriously is
bound to lose some of that
perspective."
Robert Schulman, press
critic and columnist for the
Louisville Times and Courier
Journal, will serve as the pro
gram's managing editor and
will supervise editorial con
tent. To assist in the series'
development, review progress
and provide editorial direc
tion, "Inside . Storv" has
established an editorial ad
visory board which will meet
periodically throughout the
broadcast Season. The board is
headed by James Day, former
president of National Educa
tional Television and Channel
13 in New York.
Others on the board will in
clude Ben Bagdikian, Pulitzer
Prize winning journalist and
press critic, presently a
member of the faculty of the
University of California at
Berkeley; Charles Seib, retired
ombudsman and syndicated
columnist for the Washington
Post; John Hughes, former
editor of the Christian Science
Monitor; Julius Duscha, direc
tor, Washington Journalism
Center; William ; Rusher,
Publisher, National Review;
James Thomson, curator, The
Nieman Foundation; Carolyn
Lewis, Associate Dean, Col
umbia School of Journalism,
former PBS correspondent;
H. Brandt Ayers, editor and
publisher,- the Anniston,
Alabama Star.
