Sfjjy Solomon Roberts
The public first heard
Skyy's Solomon Roberts, Jr.,
as a "ghost background
singer" on albums by his
friends Brass Construction.
Now as the singer, guitarist,
co-producer and group leader
for the Salsoul Records' band
Skyy, Sol is being seen AND
heard. Skyy's single
"Superlove" is climbing the
charts, and Skyy has sold over
a million records in only two
years. What's more.-the latest
Skyy LP, "Skyyport," has
been on the charts for over
five months.
"I learned a lot from being
able to watch Brass get their
whole thing together," Sol ex
plains, and he was more than
just a friendly observer. Sol's'
basement was the musical
hangout for his high .school
friends in Brooklyn, and after
those friends put together
Brass Construction in Sol's
downstairs rehearsal and
recording space, Roberts
decided it was time to follow
his pals into the big time.
"I was playing drums and
writing songs with my own
group at the time Brass started
to make it;. and I also would
sing with Brass on their recor
ding dates. Brass Construction
had met these three great girl
singers, but Brass had a hard
time adding them to the band
because with Brass' horn sec
tion and musicians, it made
them a 15-person group. I
figured they didn't really need
those girls with all those peo
ple, so we did a little repackag
ing and the Dunning sisters
joined what became Skyy."
. Once Brass became a best
selling record act, Sol recorded
Skyy's first album himself.
Today, with three hit albums
and four hit singles under their
belts, Skyy has brought Sol
out of the background. And
he's one ghost who will never
frighten you..
