Nature Study To Be Held At Roan Mountain SAT., MAY 16, 1981 THE CAROLINA TIMES 5 Tuesday Evening The North Carolina Botanical Garden will conduct a week-long series of nattire ,. study activities in the high mountains of Western North Carolina and eastern Ten nessee early this summer. Par ticipants from all over the state, will spend the week of June 22-29 at Roan Mountain State Park in eastern Ten-J nessee with staff from the N.C. Botanical Garden and naturalists from the .. Roan Mountain area. During daily field ' trips a wide range of topics will be covered including plants, animals and" ecology of many interesting, habitats in the mountains and valleys. Several days will be spent on Roan Mountain with Ed ScheU, well known nnaturalist at Roan Mountain Naturalist rallies, to explore the strange plant associations and to speculate on the origin and ex istence of the balds. The group will study many species of herbs, trees and shrubs with Dr. C. Ritchie Bell, directors of the N.C' Botanical Garden, and .Ken Moore, superintendent of the Garden; and ferns, with Wallace Coffey, author of V book; on the ferns of the mountains: Fungi of the. Cloud Forest wiH be taught by. Dr. John Bond of Ap palachian State University. . Participants will see the( famous rhododendrons of Roan at their peak bloom, and take early morning birdwalks at high and low elevations, in open areas, and cove forests to observe a wide'range of bird species. Day trips to other uni que areas of the Appalachians will provide a comparative study of a wider range of habitats. There will also be scheduled free time for in dividual pursuits, exploring, craft hunting, or just leisurely enjoyment of the mountain at mosphere. - Optional early evening programs will include nature slide programs and entertainment from the area. Groups of six participants (two per room) will be housed in new, completely furnished cabins. In addition to com plete eating facilities in each cabin, participants may choose to use the, nearby ; restaurant for morning or ' evening meals. The group members will have their own sack lunches in the field. Fee for this program is $95 for members of the Botanical Garden Foundation and $110 for the general public. Fee covers housing, all instruction and programmed activities. Transportatiori and meals are the responsibility of each participant.
