10 THE CAROLINA TIMES SAT..MAY23.1S81 Clubs and Socials Thrifty Service Club Mrs. Elnora Ransom entertained the Thrifty Service Club on her birthday. In honor of mothers and Mother's Day, the home was decorated with flowers. Mrs. Boxley dedicated a song to all mothers. Mrs. Beatrice Holeman presided over the business session. Plans were made for a summer picnic and the club's next trip. Mrs, Mary Vanhook was chosen the Club's Mother of the Year. Mrs. Mable Bryant, who held the honor last year, presented her with beautiful gifts and red roses from the club members. Members sang "Happy Birthday" to Mrs. Ransom and she received useful gifts. She gave a gift and token of appreciation to all the members. A repast was served. Guests for the meeting were W.P. Edwards, Albert Ransom, Rev. H. Hamilton, Rev. Dorothy Glover, Tonya McCoy and Cherly Roberts. Members attending were Mmes. Elizabeth Edwards, Pauline Boxley, Elizabeth Jones, Marie Harris, Mozell Flintall, Mattie Jones, Willie M. Jones, Ozell Flowers, Stattie Russ, Vergic Mangum, Mable Bryant, Christine Sales, Pearjie Walker, Beatrice Holeman, Mary Vanhook, Queen Cooper, Retha Core and Milie Williams. The next meeting will be at the home of Mrs. Luna Holeman. Better Homes & Gardens Club . Mrs. Helen Brown was hostess for the Better Homes & Gardens Club's Spring Banquet honoring its officers at the Hilton Inn on Sunday, May 17. Mrs. Ella Brown, president, welcomed all guests and self-introductions - were made. - -- --rv;.,, t- - Mrs. Thomasenia Shaw, secretary, introduced the speaker, Rev, R.E. Page, who gave a very timely message on "Duties of Officers of Organizations." Mrs. Beulah Hill introduced the club officers and stated their duties. . Presentations were made by Mrs. Ella Brown, Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Patricia Tilley. Gifts and expressions of appreciation were presented to Mrs. Helen Brown as hostess. The following members attended: Mmes. Addie D . Creen, Francis Watson, Louise Jenkins, Gladys A. Dawkins, Thomasenia B. Shaw, Catherine Page, Ella Brown, Beulah R. Hill, Helen Brown, Carrie Vereen, Alberta S. Harris and Patricia Tilley. Guests attending were: Mmes. Ruth S. McCollum, Rosalyn M. Cole, Lillian Cole, Gladys Burroughs, Mar tha McGhee, Gertrude Gibson, Mary Louise Stephens, Althea Hill, Mary P. Allison, Lucille Baines, Mary B. Baines, Genevieve McCrea, Jessie B. Mclntyre, Brenda Mail Order Expert Day Scheduled Experts ; in handling ' mail order inquiries in 3i cities, will be available to answer any questions the public may have regarding mail order transactions during the last two weeks in May. QR1l7Dpl.N- PHI., PA TRIM Kiddie Kollege Pupils Visit Zoo On May 9th, the children of Kiddie Kollege Day Care Center, their teachers and parents went to the zoo in Asheboro. They left Durham at 8:30 a.m. on a chartered bus and returned at 4:30. While at the zoo, the group saw all of the animals, shopped in the gift shop and had a picnic lunch. Mrs. Greene Honored At Retirement Banquet On Friday evening. May 15, about 150 persons gathered to honor Mrs. Nannie C. Greene with a sur prise banquet at the Downtowner Motor Inn. The ban quet was sponsored by Burton School faculty and staff, former co-workers, family and friends. Mrs. Greene has taught at Burton School for 28 years. Program participants were Mrs. Madeline S. Malone who presided; Rev. Lorenzo Lynch, pastor of While Rock Baptist Church; Mrs. Mable F. Harris, classmate; Mrs. Lpris Ray, friend; E.W. Midgette, former prin cipal, Ms. Sandra Bryant, former student; Harral Greene, son; Mrs. Josephine Clement, chairman of the Durham City School Board; W.L. Bradsher, friend; R. Kelly Bryant, Jr., cousin; L.M. Goode, principal of Burton School; Mrs. Thelma Bass, co-worker and friend who made presentations; Dr. Cleveland Ham monds, superintendent; and, Dr. Frank Weaver, associate superintendent. She received numerous gifts and cards. Friendly Circle Club J- The Friendly Circle Club pf St. Mark AME Zion Church held its monthly meeting with Mrs. Oveta Mcin tosh on Dupree Street recently. Devotions were led by Mrs. Florence Littlejohn. Members present were: Mmes. Sarah Cameron, Juanita Barnes, Lena Thompson, Daze! Stevens, Florence Littlejohn, Margaret Bumpass, Oveta Byers, Mildred Jones. After the business session, the hostess Mrs. Mcintosh served dinner. Mrs. Dazel Stevens thanked the hostess for an en joyable evening. NCC Area Garden Club The NCC Area Garden Club held its monthly meeting May 18 at the home of Mrs. Weona Peaks on Nebo St. The garden gate was opened by Mrs. Hatiie Johnson, chaplain, who conducted devotions. A report on the May 3 flower show was presented by Mrs. Sophine Chavis, president. Mrs. Lizzie Rawlings was chosen as the club delegate to the convention to be held in Winslon-Salem in August. . The next meeting will be held on June 1, 3 p.m., at the home of Mrs. Hattie Johnson, 605 Hope St. This will be the last meeting until September. A cookout will follow the meeting.
