"One of the ma-' jor goals of NBIPP is to build strong black institu tions, and strengthening the black family is the first step," said Mrs. Williams. Mrs. Williams said that, on Community Day, ifn formation on many issues will be provided to the black community. One major issue to be stressed is hypertension and its drastic effects on black Americans, both young and old. "Because high blooc pressure is twice . as prevalent among black Americans as among white Americans, we will be offering free blood pressure checks to everyone by registered nurses," said Mrs.. Williams, known to the Durham community as Sister Tee. Other features of Com munity Day will include exhibits by local artists, available information in Durham on senior citizens, information on African Liberation Day, contests and games for children, a karate demonstration, and enter tainment under the direc tion of Sherman Fogg by' the Burton School dancers. The public is invited and those attending may bring their own picnic baskets or they may pur chase hot foods, including :' deserts at a low cost. ' NBIPP will also observe t the 22nd annual com-i memoration of African! Liberation Day (ALD), Child (Continued 'fr'oirf Front); tered his encouragement. Dr, 1 Cleveland Ham monds, superintendent, Durham City Schools, called the group's task a great challenge and com mended their courage. State Senator Jerry Hancock was present alsoi 1 In remarks to the au dience, Mrs. Moore's con cern was the significance and critical importance of the Institute, whose sole function is black ad vocacy. "Blacks should be in the child advocacy ' forefront; it is our children that are in the worst shape," she said, "while explaining the need for black leadership. "It is imperative that we become involved in public policy in this country," Mrs. Moore said. She cited infant mortality and black poverty statistics as well as the lack of prenatal care among black mothers and the many black families that are' headed by mothers as evidence. She charged the group to "focus on issues that will make life better for a lot of children," and charged the black com munity to rally its full sup port behind the BCDI-D. "The black community must lead because our children are hurting the most, "said Mrs. Moore. The NBCDI is an in dependent, non-profit organization that organizes through na tional affiliates. The af filiate structure has allow ed the NBCDI to be suc cessful in getting parents and communities to play a dominate role in determin ing programs and impac ting upon policies that af fect their children.
