, - 1 ft-TKE CAP.SUHA TIISES s a W ' ' The Dawning ' 7 .Of Durham - v ' .. By Donald MaraUc ' Peter Saitta, chief ex-: ecutive, officer and treasurer of , the Downtown Development Corporation, told a story to the Durham Rotary Club that compared Durham to a malnourish ed rooster that fooled the farmer. '"Durham can : fool you. At one point it: reminds you of a sleepy : little tobacco town, and. then it can be the epitome of a city gone to sea, and yet it is a burgeoning center of medicine and technology," he said. Saitta, a Durham native, said that Duke and North Carolina Central Universities have been ' catalysts in bringing pro fessional people to the ci ty. Saitta said that "The New Durham" is being' strongly initialed by Terry' Sanford, an outstanding: leader who is responsible; for the Durham Progress. Group. Saitta told the Rotary Club that the research by Pannell. Kerr, and Foster, and accounting firm that specializes in the hospitali ty business was called on to determine the viability of having both a hotel facility and civic center. Saitta said that this study was conducted because to day's economic needs are tremendously different than those revealed by prior studies, which did not take into considera tion the impact of the, Research Triangle Park.' "The type of facility we1 envision is a civic center, ! hotel combination that ! will complement each other." Saitta quoted ex amples of conventions, road shows, symposia, concerts, banquets, and ballets that will be the ser vices to which the centers are expected to cater. ' ' In terms of economics, both facilities are expected ' to create about 500 jobs. The secondary effects are expected support services by elegant boutiques, I mens' shops, restaurants, night clubs, publishing companies', and othms SAT., JUNE 6, 1981. -. 9 Easy Gcsrciet CeskiigferTwo r Serve Quick Beef Burgundy over fluffy rice.
