SAT.JUNE6.1981 Calendar And Announcements THE CAROLINA TIKES 3 JAZZ IN THE PARK The first concert of the Jazz in the Park series will be held Saturday; June 13, at Duke Park. A neighborhood festival begins the activities at 3 p.m., with performances schedul cd at 6 p.m. From 3-6 p.m., the Duke Park Neighborhood Association is sponsoring a flower show, volleyball, chess and checkers. The Associa tion invites craftsmen to sell their wares and musi cians to play also. A raquctball tournament will be held also. At 6 p.m., Group Sax will perform on stage followed by Hayes Samir. A trained Rape Crisis volunteer will ' facilitate the group. , , The group will meet for about, two hours each, week at a time decided on by the group members and the facilitator, the group is open to any women . in the community. An $8 donation is requested. ' GAY MARCH A March for Lesbian and Gay . Rights is scheduled to be held in downtown Durham . Saturday, June 27, to be followed by a rally at Five Points and a picnic. An ad hoc coalition sponsoring the march arose after the beating of an allegedly gay man at the Lit ter River near Durham in April. Among the spon sors are members of the Duke Gay Alliance, Triangle Area Lesbian Feminists, Carolina Gay Association, Triangle Area-Gay Scientists, N.C. State Gay community and the Metropolitan Com munity Church. Spokespersons for the coalition said the march was organized "to demonstrate unity, celebrate the 12th anniversary of the gay rights movement and emphasize the importance of personal freedom." THE DURHAM JUNIOR NOVICE TENNIS TOURNAMENT sponsored by the Durham Parks and Recreation Department will be held at the Rock Quarry Tennis Courts June 15-18. The tournament is open to players 10-14 years Old. Applications are available at City Tennis Courts or call 683-4355 to obtain one. Entry fee is $8 for singles and $10 for doubles. ESSAY CONTEST In preparation for the Town of Carrboro's Annual July 4th festivities, youth ages 6-12 will have an opportunity to win a $50 savings bond in Carrboro's July 4th Essay Con . test. The contest is part of the Carrboro July 4th Old Fashioned Family Day Celebration sponsored by the Recreation and Parks Commission. In an effort to encourage youth in the community to think about the true meaning of Independence Day, the theme "What July 4th Means To My Family" was selected. Age divisions and world limitations are as follows: ages 6-8 will be limited to 150 words or less; ages 9-12 will be limited to 250 words or less; entries must be neatry written on lined hotepaper on one side only with an allowance for adequate margins.
