The Duke Childrens' Golf, and Tennis Classic which took place this last weekend was definitely the best ever in the eight year i -JbiktQry.bf th eVejuvu vM. The classic which is held annually to fight Childrens' disease has really become a late spring happening in Durham. Stride-A-Thon Taking It To Top i By Larry Barber The Durham Striders Youth Track Club will hold its third annual Stride-A-Thon June 5 and 6, in an attempt to raise funds and keep them on , top of the competition this year's theme. To get to the lop, the Striders are seeking the community's help as they prepare for the regional, state, and national cham pionships. Donations and pledges are requested and afternoon. WDUR-Radio station will sponsor a disco under the stars at the Shepard track Friday, and there will be other entertain ment on Saturday, ending with a victory dance at mm tf itjiJ on the Shepherd Junior High School track. Last year it was the "Second Time Around", so the team has adopted "Take It To The Top" as on sale on the track. The team and its sup porters will start running on Friday, and they will end the commons journey 26 hours later Saturday The Striders are a highly succesful group, but they need the funds for equip ment and travel. They re quest the community's support. Eagles Announce Revised Slate MRS. ERMA REID of Merrick St., was the recipient of the Durham-Orange Bowling Association's "Oustanding Achievement" award for bowling 656 in a game this year. She also received "Bowler of the Month" Award. Mrs. Reid was presented a silver tray recently as "Bowler of the Year". She bowls with the Mutualites on Monday nights. SAME PRICE Following the Mid Eastern Athelctic Con ference's 1 98 1 Spring Meetings, held at the Holi day Inn-Airport in Greensboro, on May 27-30, Commissioner Ken Free officially announced several recommendations ' that were passed. The University of Maryland-Eastern Shore was readmitted to the MEAC after a year's absence, having resigned after the 1979 fiscal year. The Princess Anne-based institution dropped its football program follow ing the 1979 season, but will participate in all other sports conducted by the Conference. Thc annual carnival of spring championships (outdoor track, golf, and tennis), held at Florida A&M this year, will return to Tallahassee in I982. Women's Athletics MEAC championships in cross country, tennis, and basketball have been add ed. The women were already participating in outdoor track and field. All-Academic teams will be- selected for all thing. WSSU Athletic Trainer To Be Honored Trainer Buddy Taylor, the athletic trainer lor all WSSU teams since 1974. will be inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Na tional Athletic Trainers Association, June 9. dur ing the association's an nual symposium and workshop to be held a.l the Tarrant County Conven tion Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Taylor has already received the 25-year ser vice pin which is required of the Hall of Fame cadidate. He has com pleted 33 years in the pro fession, dating back to his undergraduate years at Morgan State University. After receiving the master's degree from In diana University in health, safety and professional, atheletic training, Taylor NCCU Head Football Coach and Athletic Direc tor Henry C. Lattimore announced the ' revised 1981 North Carolina Cen tral football schedule. NCCU has added . Elizabeth City State (a . non-conference game) to the slate and dropped District of Columbia. The Eagles, defending CIAA champions last year with a 7-0 conference mark and 7-5 overall, look to make it two straight crowns this year. All conference schools are playing a ten-game schedule with the Nor thern Division and Southern Division cham pions meeting on November 21 in Charlotte to decide the CIAA cham pion for 1981. The Eagles have added perenniaj power Virginia Union, Norfolk State and Bowie State to their 1981 slate. Missing will be Virginia State, Elon Col lege, and Jackson State. The Eagles will have five home games Liv ingstone College (Sept. 5), Fayetteville State (Oct. 3), Morgan State (Oct. 10), Bowie State (Oct. 31) and Norfolk State (Nov. 14). The annual clash with arch-rival North Carolina A&T State that is held on the last Saturday before Thanksgiving vill be held this year on November 28 the Saturday after Thanksgiving. became the head athletic trainer at Virginia Union University. Ms. Wilma Rudolph, Ms. Wyomia Tyus and other Tiger greats. Taylor was the trainer for the USA teams in the 1967 "Little Olym pics" held in Mexico City.
